Re: Wii-U thoughts so far
And here I was getting excited for Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker and GTA5 on PC, like an idiot.
Re: Wii-U thoughts so far
Some forum members may be slanted to Nintendo, but seems to me we have them from all corners. I tend to change each generation, but I think I'm mostly agnostic. That statement about Captain Toad isn't true for me and (responding to retrogamer0001) I don't think you can really call Toad entirely new IP.RCBH928 wrote:I agree . That really goes hand and hand with some of the things mentioned, tho. I didn't take the time to read every word of every recent post in this thread on this subject, but I got the gist of it. This same thing was being discussed recently, I can't remember which thread (probably this one lol).RCBH928 wrote:I noticed forum members here are Nintendo biased and they would get excited over Captain Toad : Treasure Tracker more than the next GTA .
I'm not denying that there's a decent amount of Nintendo fans on the forum here, there is, but I don't think that's the reason why we'd get more excited over Captain Toad than the next GTA. I think it's because we're almost all adults here, let's say mostly 21 and over. I know that we have a decent amount of members that are younger, but all of the them that are regulars, I really don't remember which ones they are. They're more mature than the average person their age, and so they blend in pretty good with the older crowd on the forums here.
Games that are rated "mature" lose their appeal as you get older. People that are, say, ages 13-18 are more likely to play those "mature" games. Some one made a really good point as to why. When you're that age, you're always desperately trying to prove that you're not a child. Games that are rated "mature" are perceived to be something an older person would play, and they're NOT for a young audience. And when you're in that age group, you're more fascinated with blood and gore, sex, cursing, etc. Also, let's face it, when you're in that age group, cursing is cool. Blah, blah, blah. All that jazz.
But as you get older, you tend to look for more in a game than just cursing, over the top violence, yadda yadda. That sort of thing starts losing its appeal after a while. A game that's built solely around blowing shit up or shooting some one until their head explodes. I guess as you get more mature, that sort of thing isn't amazing to you anymore. Or that sort of thing starts to get old. Or both? Whatever the case, you're not obsessed with that sort of thing anymore.
Most Nintendo games aren't "kiddie" games, they're almost all E... for EVERYONE. People of all ages. Some one that's 13-18 might perceive them as games for children. Bright colors. Happy characters. No cursing, no heads exploding, no beating a hooker down with a bat then stealing her money. But since they're for all ages, adults, like the ones on the forum here, can enjoy them. Maybe it's that they're Nintendo fans. Maybe it's that it's a throwback to gaming from their own childhood. Or maybe it's that we don't NEED are gaming to be "mature" to have fun playing it.
I mean, me personally, I have no problem running people over in GTA or shooting the heads off Zombies or whatever. But I played a lot of Doom 95, countless hours of Goldeneye, and countless hours of GTA3. Maybe I'm just tired of the genres? Or maybe the gameplay really is shallow and repetitive when you get down to it. Once you take out the violence, blood, cursing... is there enough left to enjoy the game?
And I'm not knocking any games or series here. I'm not saying that GTA is shallow with out what makes it "mature". I'm questioning... Is it? Because when I was young I had a SNES then an N64. When I was in high school I had a PS2. All of my PS2 games during that time were GTA or similar, FPS, and very few others (it wasn't until more recent years that I started getting PS2 games outside those genres). This past gen I had a PS3, but I spent way more time with my Wii. GTA4 was the first game I got for the PS3, and while I had some fun with it, I just didn't spend the countless hours I did with GTA3. The only FPS I actually enjoyed this past gen was Bioshock 1 and 2. Is it because I'm bored with the genre? Or is it that now that I'm older I need more in a game than just what gives it the M for mature. I mean, most FPS games these days are just go from point A to point B and shoot / blow up everything in between.
I don't even know what I just said.
I stopped three times during this post to do something else. I don't know if I got my point across or not. I kinda forgot what my ultimate goal of this post was.

I disagree with disliking M rated games as we age. I sure havent. I probably like them more. I find that many of my favorite games and movies are rated M or R

It makes sense. It very much relates to my egregiously long-winded post on this topic earlier.Ziggy587 wrote:RCBH928 wrote:I noticed forum members here are Nintendo biased and they would get excited over Captain Toad : Treasure Tracker more than the next GTA .
Also, I don't like your stance in this RCBH. Are you telling me what I can and can not get excited over? Do I want a new 3D puzzle game reminiscent of the old school puzzle games that I enjoyed, but in new ways with modern technology, or am I excited for a game that I played on the PS2 with even more dull mini-games and shocking controversial scenes that serve no purpose but to be shocking and controversial with a completely broken on-line mechanic? I played through GTA V with genuine excitement and ended up being bored.
I enjoy Nintendo games, yes, but I am old and have played too many games for my own good and have seen a lot and get tired of the same old stuff. New Super Mario Bros. U was fun, but I could never play again. It was just more Super Mario Bros. U levels. What is one of my favorite games on the Wii U? ZombiU. Why? It uses the technology in fun and different ways and it does it right.
I am not saying you can't be excited about GTA V, but your assumption that I should be more excited for another iteration of a standard franchise that does little to do things differently and getting a new game that, yes, has an established character, but has a fun mechanic that I personally will enjoy. Will Captain Toad be a system seller? No. Will it be an instant classic? No. Will it be fun? Looks like it... at least for me.
Does my love for games stick to Nintendo? No. I am primarily a PC gamer, who finds the most fulfilling games to be on the PC and PS3, but the most fun games being on a nintendo console.
Oh I can't argue that. Some of my all time favorite games are M rated, but are also M rated because they really do deal with mature concepts. Games like Heavy Rain are seriously some of my all time favorite games. Many films are R, but R for the right reasons, because what they feature is actual content and take people on an emotional ride that is far from superficial. I think that may be where I stand now on games. I don't want Superficial games. I want substantial. I want games that create entertaining experiences with others. I get that with the Wii U playing with my wife and brother, I get that with my PS3 for a solo experience and I get it with my PC with people I play with in long distances.Jmustang1968 wrote:I disagree with disliking M rated games as we age.
