That's why most online RPGs lose me quickly. They're fun at first but once I hit the endgame and suddenly it matters to everyone around me that I min-max my character and know the absolute most efficient way to play them it becomes a chore instead of a game.marlowe221 wrote:I think the people that really get into RPGs are really into the mechanics of those games. I know that on the message boards of Diablo-style games it is not uncommon to see detailed mathematical equations on how damage is calculated for a particular skill or how buffs stack with each other.Gunstar Green wrote: I think that's a major part of it, yes. Dice rolls remove quite a bit of player agency. In an action game you generally want to depend more on your skill than statistics.
But then again maybe I'm wrong. I only recently started poking at the Borderlands games and that seems to have a lot of dice roll dependence.
People really get into that kind of thing (not me).

No thank you! I played through Battletoads years ago, and I am not doing that again. I also have no intention of torturing myself with Holy Diver.Sarge wrote:That's pretty impressive, then. It took me more than that, but I definitely hemorrhaged the most in Propeller Knight's stage. You should go take on Holy Diver or Battletoads now, if you were on that kind of roll.
What helped me is the fact that the game plays a lot like a DuckTales/Mega Man hybrid. I played both of those games a lot as a child; so, I grasped the mechanics pretty quickly.
Re: Do You Have Any Unpopular Gaming Opinions?
Yeah, I played a ton of Mega Man, but less DuckTales, so that might have been where the skill deficit came from. I'm wanting to say I was in the 70 range, but I'm not completely sure.
Re: Do You Have Any Unpopular Gaming Opinions?
Makes me want to say, I struggled to get through Duck Tales remastered.
Absolutely loved the charm factor and cuteness to it, but something about it didn't really grab me. I did finish it, but it's definitely one I don't see myself replaying.
I don't think I ever played the NES original, so maybe it was just a nostalgic thing for most. There were a ton of other Looney and Tiny Toons games I played back then that I loved though.

I actually didn't play the NES original until after I played Duck Tales Remastered, and I absolutely loved the game. Then again, I'm a huge fan of WayForward in general, so I might have gone into it a bit biased because of my love for the studio in general.Xeogred wrote:Makes me want to say, I struggled to get through Duck Tales remastered.

Went back and checked, and my clear save was 72 lives lost, 78 after getting 100%. Over 100 in NG+, but I think that also carries over the previous lives lost. I'm pretty sure I went through hard in about 35. Did that at work, though, so I'll have to check there.
(Yes, I played at work at lunch. Don't judge me.)

Agree with this. I'm playing it slowly a stage or something every week as I like to rotate between things. It's very much a child of both those designs. I've not had any problems so far, but I've only taken down the first 3 knights. The most issues I've had is goofing up jumps.prfsnl_gmr wrote:No thank you! Now Holy Diver, maybe i didn't get more than a few stages into it when I last tried, but I really didn't think it was all that horrible and worthy of being spited on for being overly difficult while Battletoads between the speeder stages and snakes is for sadists.
Re: Do You Have Any Unpopular Gaming Opinions?
The first three stages aren't terrible. Hard and annoying, but not terrible. It's stage 4 onward that gets outright evil. The eyeball tower boss is bullcrap to the nth power, and stages 5 and 6, especially the last two segments, are pure evil. Seriously, give that Funkdoc run a look, it's insane. He makes it look easy, but it's anything but.Tanooki wrote: Now Holy Diver, maybe i didn't get more than a few stages into it when I last tried, but I really didn't think it was all that horrible and worthy of being spited on for being overly difficult while Battletoads between the speeder stages and snakes is for sadists.
(Seriously, I was thinking, "Hey, this isn't too bad!" Then stage 4-6 happened.)
(Also, I'm weird, but I find the Turbo Tunnels ridiculously easy. The only thing that ever gives me some issue is the last segment, and that's only if I lose my rhythm somehow with the audio cues. It obviously didn't used to be that way, but it is now.)
Re: Do You Have Any Unpopular Gaming Opinions?
For me kid or adult to pass the last bit comes down to dumb luck. When they start that last bit where you basically just have to move before it even starts flashing on screen from memory where it's only one path with 2 stone walls elsewhere is where it ends for me. I never had much issue with the snake part people complain about, just those damned bikes. The days I got through it on luck I'd clear the game back when I was good at it years ago. It's just not worth getting pissed off over anymore to me.

Re: Do You Have Any Unpopular Gaming Opinions?
I've seen the games you've beaten, Sarge, and you of all people should never say you have a skill deficit. (I mean, you beat Bayou Billy, Not even Captain N could handle that game!). I plug it a lot, but since (I think) you have a Wii U, I'll plug it again. You really must play Electronic Super Joy. It is an amazingly intense and deeply satisfying 2D plat former, and I enjoyed it immensely. In light of the types of games you seem to enjoy playing, I think you should give it a shot. (Nintendolife's reviewer couldn't beat it, and I died over 700 times trying to beat one of its bonus levels...after completing an optional task that, for the better part of a week, I thought was impossible in the Wii Zu port.)Sarge wrote:Went back and checked, and my clear save was 72 lives lost, 78 after getting 100%.
