A wise decision. You're not missing anything. Other than that lovely jazzy OST, but you can listen to that without suffering through the game.Westane wrote:So I just called it quits on Breath of Fire III. Closing in on 20 hours and still not caring...

Man I can't pinpoint any consistency whatsoever with Star Ocean 4. I can't wait to play it myself to see what the heck the fuss is. With Popo's recent comparison with it to 5, I like how he mentioned 4 is the heaviest on the sci-fi, maybe a bonus for me because sci-fi is the best.Westane wrote:So I just called it quits on Breath of Fire III. The next game on my list is Tomba 2 but AFTER THAT is Star Ocean: Second Story (PS1 version). Star Ocean 3 is one of my personal favorite RPG's but I thought 4 was boring as all hell. This'll be my first time playing Second Story.
Re: What RPG are you playing right now?
Second Story is the best of that series, followed closely by First Departure, which is the PSP remake of the first game. In some ways, First Departure is better, though, because it's a little more brief than Second Story.

I called it quits on Second Story around the start of the first disc. The story really wasn't drawing me in (despite dat twist), and I really didn't care for the crafting system at all either. The combat was okay, but I felt it was a bit too confusing to really be fun. I always felt like I was doing something wrong :/Sarge wrote:Second Story is the best of that series, followed closely by First Departure, which is the PSP remake of the first game. I'm very excited to play some of the Tales games from that era to see how they stack up, being as a lot of the Tri-Ace guys are (or at least were) ex-Tales people.

I too think it was maybe some of the systems that overwhelmed me with Star Ocean 2. Like I joked above, the sci-fi setting should be a major pull for me, but I didn't even get off the first planet after like 10 hours or something and that's apparently the start of the game. I liked it, but I recall having to manage a lot of stuff in between battles. Which for comparisons sake is what killed Tales of Graces F for me, the constant need to cook in between every battle was blah.PartridgeSenpai wrote:I called it quits on Second Story around the start of the first disc. Just be weary that Tales of Destiny on the PS1 has an insane encounter rate and the ugliest overworld map you'll ever see. It's like mode 7 on drugs.
Re: What RPG are you playing right now?
If you haven't already purchased it I highly recommend you get Star Ocean 4 on the PS3. The 360 version is on 3 disks and the planets are divided up by disks, so if you want to do backtracking for a variety of good reasons you will have to do disk swapping.Xeogred wrote:Man I can't pinpoint any consistency whatsoever with Star Ocean 4. Last night I put about 10 minutes into Soul Blazer. I think it's pretty good, so I'm going to start playing it. Here's hoping I can knock out another SNES RPG.

I have no doubt you'll knock out Soul Blazer pretty quickly. And I'm betting you'll have a blast doing it.

It's that time again, folks. I have five RPGs currently installed on my computer. I need to pick one to play. Eventually I want to get through all of them of course, but that will come in due time. What do you guys think I should look at? What are the merits of all of them?
Ultima III: Exodus
Menzoberranzan
Eye of the Beholder
Gothic

Meh.
>Menzoberranzan
If you enjoyed the Dark Elf Trilogy (I did), then you'll probably enjoy this. It can be a little crusty-clunky, but that never stopped Ack before.
>Eye of the Beholder
A solid choice. The sequel as well. Third time's not a charm.
>Gothic
All I've ever read is praise for this game. Probably the best pick overall here.
>The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind
A lot of people swear this is the best Elder Scrolls game. I tried playing it myself years ago, but didn't get hooked. That's not me saying it's a bad game though. It's likely a great game, but you've got to be willing to get invested in its lore, and that means reading a lot. READING A LOT. If you can get into the lore, you'll probably love it. I plan to give it another chance someday now that I'm older and less derp.
Old GOGered RPGs I suggest knowing your tastes:

I believe wholeheartedly you personally would enjoy all those.
