Re: What RPG are you playing right now?
I've tried 3 different times to get through BoFII, and I never ever can. Though the bad translation is always worth a laugh ("You have become beautiful woman!"), the plot is just so uncompelling, I always get bored around like the halfway mark. Usually not too long after getting Sven.

I'm not a fan of Breath of Fire 2 either. The encounter rate and heavy grind hurt it significantly, followed by the poor translation. I hear it is immensely improved on the GBA, but I have not tried that version. In truth, I find it similar to Secret of the Stars but with a much better paint job.
I've beaten Breath of Fire 1, 2, and 3, and I'd say 2 was probably my the hardest for me to get through.

As mentioned earlier, the retranslation patch is the way to go for BoFII.
Re: What RPG are you playing right now?
I really liked the character designs in BoFII and that was enough to keep me going. I think I ended up getting distracted by CS or something around the final dungeon and never finished, and that save file is long gone. So I have a run through to beat the game on my SNES at some point in the future.

Re: What RPG are you playing right now?
I've played both, and as far as I could tell it was just the SNES game on a GBA. Still horrible translation errors (that one mentioned before was from my attempted GBA runthrough) that are unmissable in the story, and the brick walls of bosses were still present as far as I could tell, though maybe they're a little better balanced than the SNES one? I tried playing the SNES one on virtual console ages ago, and it's been a few years since I had the GBA game either, so I can't remember that much in explicit detail (save that unforgettable quote).Ack wrote:I'm not a fan of Breath of Fire 2 either. I just looked it up. A lot of the changes are cosmetic, though a dash button was added for the GBA rerelease.
Re: What RPG are you playing right now?
The retranslation adds a dash button as well, although it doesn't work everywhere.

That's the one I haven't tried yet. But the "beat the game multiple times for the story to expand/true endings" gimmick that I've heard about isn't very appealing on the outside.pierrot wrote:BoF5

It's....pretty bad.Xeogred wrote:That's the one I haven't tried yet. But the "beat the game multiple times for the story to expand/true endings" gimmick that I've heard about isn't very appealing on the outside.pierrot wrote:BoF5
The gimmick sounds better in theory then it does in practice. The game is very hard and the idea of a roguelike RPG is a bit contradictory.
It's a love it or hate it game. If you play it for an hour, you'll know your opinion. I didn't understand it nor did I enjoy it at all. The only reason I played it is because I love Breath of Fire 1 - 4. And Dragon Quarter has nothing to do with the previous games besides the names Ryu and Nina.
It's worth trying for cheap and if you have a very forgiving open mind. For me, it's pretty bad and I forget it exists at times.

I agree. I love weird and experimental RPGs. Dragon Quarter I just found tedious and frustrating and painful to look at. I consider it the worst in the series and the only installment I'd consider "bad."
I'd say it's on par with something like Unlimited Saga, another obtuse and annoying game from an otherwise great series.
