I liked scott pilgrim and then I bought it on bluray and then I liked it again.

I feel like the problem here is that dsheinem and I were not watching the same movie. Just to comment on a few things you said. The movie takes place ENTIRELY in a video game world. I don't see how that is ever ambiguous. It is COMPLETELY realized as a game world. 8-bit music plays during certain scenes, Scott's defeated enemies turn into coins. When Scott has an epiphany he levels up. Even the weird way the movie jumps ahead in time to fast forward the story. That's all video games Everything that happens in the movie happens like it would in a game. Fighting seven evil exes to win Romana's love? Um, no I'm sorry but that is NOT typical romcom fare. That's a video game story. The 1up he got made sense because he just outscored the other band, or to put it another way he beat the boss. Either way he earned enough points for a 1up. Or perhaps all the coins he's gotten from every battle finally amounted to a 1up. It's almost like you've never actually played a video game before to not pick up on these things

And I have never considered telling someone that they are being harsh to be an insult, it's an observation. You said you weren't taking a harsh view of the character. I simply debated the point that I thought you were. If I wanted to insult you, I'd ask Inazuma for something funny to say

And I know it's not technically an indie film, but it certainly feels like one. And name me one movie that is like Scott Pilgrim since you seem so certain that it is not original

I am really tired of debating a film I didn't like, so this will (probably) be it for me.

Here are just a couple of things that made me think it wasn't a convincing video game world:

-Most video game worlds have rules that dictate gameplay and involve lots of repetitive action with similar results. Everything in the film seemed random - there was no consistent action/reaction in the film aside from the coins. There was no running high score, and the random sound effects, power-ups, and meters were just that (random). The game effects seemed largely gimmicky, like the director thought to himself "what game-esque effect could I use to punctuate this scene?". The cynical side of me thinks that it was largely at the bequest of the studio...

-The characters do not act like game characters throughout. Most significantly, they spend a hell of a lot of time exploring questions about love, romance, sex, and rock and roll (all at a teen level) a hell of a lot more than video game characters usually do. Even when the film does become a series of game-esque fight scenes, these seem like something put in for the purpose of aiding style to the narrative, and not really to aid in telling it.


It isn't that I didn't catch or understand the references to games, it was just that, as I've said throughout, they seem shoehorned in. Contrast Scott Pilgrim, which makes allusions to games in a sloppy way and throws them in for stylistic effect, to Wright's Sean of the Dead or Hot Fuzz, which are both spot on in how they draw on their source material. I really love those films, but Wright missed the mark when he decided to riff on games and game culture.

A big part of the problem is the horrendous writing (take the whole Clash at Demonhead scene and ensuing vegan fight). Maybe it was Wright's new co-writer for SP that fucked things up, but the wit of his earlier films was entirely absent from SP.

I stand by my 1/5. If nothing else, debating the "merits" of the film has made me even firmer in my belief that it is shit.

Amazing, epic, a classic. I loved the characters, the plot was suspenseful. Everyone should see it. Totally worth three and a half hours.

What is it with Europeans and depressing films? This was melancholy. It had touching moments, but ultimately didn't go anywhere or accomplish anything, leaving most of the characters no better off than when they started.

Just watched "How To Marry A Millionaire" feat. Marilyn Monroe and Betty Grable. It takes place in New York @ 1950-60? Nice little old-time comedy about three women scheming to marry rich men, only to end up finding true love.

Good for you man, you just watched one of the finest pieces of cinema ever captured. The beauty and brilliance of that film cannot be captured by words alone.

Check out some other Kurosawa classics for sure, namely Sanjuro and The Hidden Fortress. You will not be disappointed.
