Dated mechanically, yes. Dated in terms of message, style and heart, no.Ack wrote:Earthbound is a very dated game.

No, its style was dated too in my opinion. It pulled heavily from early 1990s American culture, so its art design shares the same quirkiness as a lot of media from that time. That isn't a criticism of it; it is a great representation of that era. But it is dated.

I wouldn't go as far as terrible, played worse, far worse, even on that system. It's not great thought, definitely not excellent, and especially not gods gift to gaming that deserves a huge fan base with their own big website(starmen) and circle of other sites. You know the ones that collectively whine about never getting Mother 3, feeling entitled to it, and constantly harping on why others don't get why it's the best thing on a chip. It's average, great story and feeling to it, it's good that way, but play wise, average.

Don't worry Tanooki, Undertale is well on its way to claiming Earthbound's twee-RPG throne.

Re: Do You Have Any Unpopular Gaming Opinions?
I never got into Earthbound but except for a small handful of examples I could never get into JRPGs period so it was never meant for me in the first place.
The same goes for Undertale so far which I only tried to play because a friend who demands I play it has foisted it upon my Steam library. I've tried to make progress but I've been having trouble. While playing it I can see what the fuss is about, it's a fresh twist on the genre as well as a clever deconstruction of its tropes but much of that significance is completely lost on me because I either don't understand or don't care, leaving me with just a boring, tedious game.
People keep telling me AVOID SPOILERS OMG but I think I'd be happier just watching a let's play. It'd be more amusing to at least watch someone who's having fun.

Hate Earthbound.
Undertale doesn't look interesting to me at all.

Undertale looks really twee, but Earthbound? Nah, it's just a good game. It's effectively Dragon Quest in a modern setting with a great sense of humor. I wouldn't say it's the most absolutely spectacular bestest game EVAR, but it's certainly a good one.
Mother 3 was good, too, but it wasn't quite as funny, and was actually very depressing in a lot of ways. It's a surprisingly melancholy game.

EarthBound is one of my favorite games ever. It's goofy but also very honest and heartfelt.
I don't think it feels particularly dated. It's not like a Working Designs game where the dialogue is full of specific 90s references.
I suppose I "get" why (some) people don't like it though. It's not for everyone, that's for sure.
