Apogee was a fantastic game company! I'm not even a big PC gamer and I love their games.

BTW, since we're on the subject of Apogee: Tyrian 2000 and Stargunner are free on GoG.com, at least they were when I downloaded them.

They still are, along with several other great games, like Beneath A Steel Sky, Teen Agent, and Lure of the Temptress. Their winter sale is going on right now, and they often offer a variety of free titles. I've picked up Duke Nukem 3D and The Witcher for free on their site, amongst a bunch of other games.

I got Duke Nukem 3D last year for free. And damn, wish I would have known about The Witcher. I picked up copy at Target a couple months earlier.

Oh man, Crystal Caves and Mystic Towers. Don't hear about those games very often anymore. As for Apogee, I've always been quite partial to Alien Carnage and Duke Nukem II myself.

Speaking of these old PC games, I really need to play Catacomb Abyss again one of these days. Any fans? I rarely see it mentioned but I thought it was great. For some reason the enemies in that game used to scare the shit out of me as a kid.

Why just Abyss? Why not all of Catacomb 3-D? It's id Software's pre-Wolfenstein 3D fantasy FPS. Abyss and the later episodes were programmed by Softdisk.

Abyss has always been more memorable to me than the original Catacomb games. I wonder about the games after Abyss too, but I've yet to play those.

Oh shit. The duke nukem games, halloween harry, secret agent, crystal caves, cosmo, monster bash, and commander keen. So many fond memories with these games. Pretty much sums up my toddler and earlier childhood years.

I loved Apogee and early Id Software games when I was in high school. 3D Realms was still selling floppies of Apogee titles in those days and I could occasionally find copies for sale at game stores, so I built up a sizable collection; plus I got download copies of Id's games they made for Softdisk. The Commander Keen games were my top favorites of those companies' output.

I remember Catacomb Abyss being fun, but IIRC it's a weird step back from the first Catacomb 3D.

Some guy randomly accused a game critic (Leigh Alexander) of having a sexist avatar because her very own is shown sideways, asking if a male journalist would do the same.

It's so dumb I must have lost my front lobe just my reading about it.
