Went back to playing Dragon Quest VIII, didn't realize I was in the last dungeon! But i took another few hours of grinding. Not a bad game by any means, I know they like to please there fans but it really gets boring.

DQ VIII was a lot of fun. I played through over half way once and got bored or busy with it before finishing. I ended up revisiting it last year and had a fun time. The character/monster designs are really fun and creative.

Right now I'm on hiatus from any RPGs but I'm looking for a good DS one to start.
Either Disgaea or Devil Survivor or Dark Spire ?

I'm not actively playing it... because I've been playing other games instead, but currently I'm working my way through Persona for PSP.

I've only put a little bit of time into FF13, but I like it. The story works for me, and I don't mind if the game focuses more on that and combat than optional stuff. I'm pretty much exhausted from sidequests and grinding in other FF games, so I don't mind having a break from that and getting something a bit more linear and I'm sure it will be more interesting later in the game when it opens up. I actually think combat and story are pretty much the core element of these games anyway.

I sort of like having a rank system in place and the mix of FFX 2/FF12 combat i think is great. I like how pre-emptive strikes work, and being able to use items pre-combat for an advantage. And it goes without saying, but FF13 on a PS3 with an HD tv is absolutely gorgeous and I'm not even playing on a large screen. Sorry Bioware, Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age will have to wait patiently until I finish this

To put some perspective, I got to the open part after 23 hours, and then spent another 17 hours in the open part. Then you go into another linear part for two short dungeons before the final boss. Currently I'm paused at the last boss; I got trounced the first time and the second time I got beaten on a technicality. It seems if you're not aggressive enough then after some period of time he'll cast doom and give you a time limit on the battle. But now I think I can get him, but I need to get some sleep before work.

I'm at around 8 hours now and just entered the Gapra Whitewood, which is the beginning of disc two for the 360 version.

So then you recommend hanging around Gran Pulse for a while before tackling the last two dungeons? I've heard a lot of people just pressing on and supposedly you can return to Gran Pulse post game with a whole new set of Crystarium levels to unlock

So, I'm assuming this means there must be some huge secret boss or something you can power up for.

There's at least the mark system like they had in FFXII, so I'm assuming that a few of those marks will be tougher than the last boss by quite a bit

I hung around because I wanted to do all the marks. Then I hit a wall where the only B rank left was the Gigantaur that uses 10k needles (and my grid doesn't go high enough to give me the HP to survive) and the rest were A ranks that dealt damage faster than I could heal even using a Sentinal and a Medic with a Commando for damage. I haven't even seen 40% of the marks, although I completed 50% before going back to Cocoon for the final confrontation. You can return to Gran Pulse at the start of chapter 13 (final dungeon) if you want to grind some more or attempt some marks, but I decided to press on. I'm really looking forward to the post game and breaking that damage limit. I've already hit 99,999 a few times using Scourge on Behemeth Kings with a 999.9% stagger (huzzah 650% stagger point).

So in terms of candidates, first we have the Adamantoise, which are the big daddy versions of the giant elephant things. They're not a secret, though, as you can see them walking around (and you better not run into them). There is a trophy for taking them down. The next candidate is the giant golem thing that can pick up an Adamantoise in the palm of its hand. It seems to be linked to a group of 7 marks who's quest givers are in a circle near him; every time I take one the camera pans up to him and he emotes. Or there could be something in a super secret dungeon I haven't unlocked yet, but was mentioned by an NPC that throws out random hints when you talk to it.
