I only know one person who liked that movie. Everyone else said it was just a bunch of horror movie references referencing each other.
My friend who wanted to go liked it. I and another friend thought it was shit.

And yeah, it was like they were parodying their own series while trying to change it. Problem was that they did a shitty job at it.
That's kind of the point though. The Scream series has always been a parody or a pastiche of the slasher genre. It forces everything it does because that's exactly what the genre is. In this case the Scream film was parodying the dozen or so slasher updates and remakes that have been released in the last decade, many of which also did a shitty job. So in essence you're seeing a breakdown of a genre portrayed in a single film. Yes it's cliched and poorly put together; so is most of the slasher genre.

Anyway, I've watched more films since Witchfinder General.

Tokyo Drifter - This is a great 1960s Yakuza film that combines many elements of both the Samurai and Western film genres. Seijin Suzuki effectively employs color and framing to emphasize the characters, and the tale is violent and action-packed. I love a good gangster film, and this is a very interesting Japanese take that deserves to be watched for its visual style, though some of the music and dancing may make you laugh.

Final Justice - I watched the MST3K version of the horrible Joe Don Baker action film, in which a Texas Ranger named Thomas Jefferson Geronimo hunts down an Italian hitman loose in Malta. Hilarity (and bad editing) ensues. I should also note that of all the MST3K episodes I've ever watched, this one had my favorite final credit riffs.

Laserblast - Again, MST3K. Apparently Leonard Maltin gave this movie a 2 1/2 stars. Apparently he saw a different film from what I saw. Even with Mike and the bots making fun of this movie, it spends an uncomfortable amount of time focusing on 15-year-old girls in swimsuits. It's not Child Bride, but it still made me feel dirty.

The Touch of Satan - For the third time, MST3K. Actually I'd be willing to watch this film without them, as I didn't think it was that bad. It's a tale of a 1970s guy helping a girl who sold her soul to Satan to save her sister from being burned at the stake in the 1800s. And now that sister is an old woman who likes to murder randomly. Ok, there are some issues with the plot, but overall I liked it. The male lead actually did a decent job with poor material.

Play Dirty - A Michael Caine war film, I watched this because I had heard it compared favorably to The Dirty Dozen. I'd agree, I loved this tale of a band of mercenary criminals in a special operations unit being sent to destroy an oil refinery in North Africa. The movie definitely sticks to its message: war is a very nasty affair. Also it's interesting for its depiction of a loving homosexual couple in the unit.

Anyway, watched another movie.

The Brother from Another Planet - I really liked this film. Joe Morton plays The Brother, an alien slave who escapes to New York City on Earth. He slowly learns his way around, but is mute. Despite this, he still carries the film, allowing other characters to open up to him in ways many could not if he'd been able to speak. To them he is almost a blank slate for them to project their thoughts on. The film meditates on race and living life quite a bit, communicating in ways films rarely do.

Along the way The Brother is pursued by two alien white bounty hunters known as the Men in Black. These two move like snakes, twisting and intertwining in ways that mark their performances as more than a little off-putting, in a good way. The audio cues back them up on this, with snakelike hisses and rattles, while The Brother is often accompanied with various musical instruments.

While the film is often hilarious (I laughed out loud multiple times at the conversation in the bar near the start of the film), it features some mature moments, such as The Brother's pursuit of a drug dealer after a nightmarish drug sequence.

Overall, this is a great little scifi film that's worth checking out.

Just got done watching Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance. I liked Oldboy a bit better, but it was still a wonderfully twisted movie. I had seen the middle one first since that was released here before the others. Now I can get to Lady Vengeance sometime in the near future, though I'll probably rewatch Oldboy first so I watch them in the correct order, even though they're not technically a series.

Saw this for the first time last night. Suddenly, I was able to get a bunch of jokes in various TV shows I hadn't realized were jokes.

And more movies...

City Hunter - I finally got to see the film so infamous for dressing Jackie Chan up as Chun Li. I liked it overall, the action was good, though at times I felt the slapstick humor was unnecessarily overdone. Apparently Chan disowned this film after its release, though I haven't been able to find out why. I still enjoyed it, though there are more impressive Jackie Chan films.

The General - Ah, Buster Keaton, I laughed so hard at you. His stunts in this film were impressive, until I realized that he was doing this all on his own with no safety net, and then I became truly amazed. This was the film he was proudest of, and I think he deserves to be. The subject matter's also interesting, focusing on a pro-Southern train engineer who helps recover a stolen train and spy on the Union. Keaton wrote the script and directed, produced, and starred in the leading role, but I wonder what made him so interested in the idea in the first place.

Flame & Citron - Another great resistance movie, up there with Army of Shadows, which I found to be astonishing. The film revolves around two men who became the most heavily sought after resistance fighters in Nazi-controlled Denmark. But though they believe in their cause, over time they are forced to commit acts that make them question themselves and the motives of the men they work for, ultimately leading to their downfall. This film deserves to be watched by fans of WWII-themed movies.

Clash of the Titans, the original. I hadn't seen it since I was a kid. I watched it again because I just watched the remake a couple weeks back. The original is SOOOOO much better than the remake. There's no heart in the remake. And they changed so much for no good reason.
