That's kind of the point though. The Scream series has always been a parody or a pastiche of the slasher genre. It forces everything it does because that's exactly what the genre is. In this case the Scream film was parodying the dozen or so slasher updates and remakes that have been released in the last decade, many of which also did a shitty job. So in essence you're seeing a breakdown of a genre portrayed in a single film. Yes it's cliched and poorly put together; so is most of the slasher genre.YoshiEgg25 wrote:My friend who wanted to go liked it. I only know one person who liked that movie. Everyone else said it was just a bunch of horror movie references referencing each other.
And yeah, it was like they were parodying their own series while trying to change it. Problem was that they did a shitty job at it.
Anyway, I've watched more films since Witchfinder General.
Tokyo Drifter - This is a great 1960s Yakuza film that combines many elements of both the Samurai and Western film genres. Seijin Suzuki effectively employs color and framing to emphasize the characters, and the tale is violent and action-packed. I love a good gangster film, and this is a very interesting Japanese take that deserves to be watched for its visual style, though some of the music and dancing may make you laugh.
Final Justice - I watched the MST3K version of the horrible Joe Don Baker action film, in which a Texas Ranger named Thomas Jefferson Geronimo hunts down an Italian hitman loose in Malta. Hilarity (and bad editing) ensues. I should also note that of all the MST3K episodes I've ever watched, this one had my favorite final credit riffs.
Laserblast - Again, MST3K. Apparently Leonard Maltin gave this movie a 2 1/2 stars. Apparently he saw a different film from what I saw. Even with Mike and the bots making fun of this movie, it spends an uncomfortable amount of time focusing on 15-year-old girls in swimsuits. It's not Child Bride, but it still made me feel dirty.
The Touch of Satan - For the third time, MST3K. Actually I'd be willing to watch this film without them, as I didn't think it was that bad. It's a tale of a 1970s guy helping a girl who sold her soul to Satan to save her sister from being burned at the stake in the 1800s. And now that sister is an old woman who likes to murder randomly. Ok, there are some issues with the plot, but overall I liked it. The male lead actually did a decent job with poor material.
Play Dirty - A Michael Caine war film, I watched this because I had heard it compared favorably to The Dirty Dozen. I'd agree, I loved this tale of a band of mercenary criminals in a special operations unit being sent to destroy an oil refinery in North Africa. The movie definitely sticks to its message: war is a very nasty affair. Also it's interesting for its depiction of a loving homosexual couple in the unit.
