Well, you keep saying online/multi, so you're implying that all multiplayer games are wrong. I figure you're mostly in the heat of the moment when you write, but I'll try to clarify...you mean online only, not necessarily multiplayer games, right?
Yes let me clarify I'm speaking of online/multi player like counter strike, WOW etc. I'm not against 2 player games. Just the whole multi/online garbage everyone is so all up on.
Just because it sells doesn't mean you have to consume it. Plenty of fine single-player games come out every year. Of course you're not going to find what you're looking for if you're only looking in the direction of what you don't want.
His argument is that game developers aren't making quality single player titles anymore because everyone focuses on multiplayer.
I'm gonna have to disagree with you, however. I've played many games with good single and online multiplayer. Sure, certain games only offer one or the other, and certain genres like MMOs are built entirely around one aspect, but...well, take Call of Duty 4. I really enjoyed its single player missions. So much so, that I ran through the entire game multiple times on different difficulties. Half-Life 2 had some amazing single player, as did Half Life 1, yet both also had solid online play. I think the issue you're having is that you don't like what most developers are putting out nowadays anyway. To be totally honest, I'm not very impressed with this current generation, and I love online multiplayer. I do agree with you that in some instances, the online part is being overly emphasized. I feel much of the extremely popular stuff on Xbox 360 is like this, built to push Live. In some cases, I've seen complaints when online connectivity is not a feature, like Soul Calibur 4. To each his own, I suppose.
Then again, remember...games are about making money. Games can be inventive, artistic, and all manner of other things. But at the end of the day, they exist to make money for whoever made them. Just like movies. And look how good Hollywood is doing these days. Some folks believe a new crash is coming, and then we'll get new companies with new consoles bringing us games. I don't know if that's true or not, and to be honest...I don't know how much I really care. I just want to play what I like. If you don't like online stuff...don't play it. Simple as that.
Now if you ever get the hankering for some online gankering, drop us a line. I'm planning on playing Warhammer when it gets released...wanna show a few stunties me Squiggies. But I like knowing that somewhere out there in this wide world, somebody is screaming at me because I just spent the last ten minutes hunting and stalking him, and I just moved in for the kill. World PvP...ain't it grand?
Personally, I'm just sick of of how every game now has to be both a single player game and a multi-player game. Although this is mostly a problem with the shooter genre. Most shooters aren't giving you the best kind of single player adventure the developers can provide, because they're wasting half of their efforts on the stupid mutli-player mode.
Think of some of the best single player adventures you've ever played. Would they have been as great if half of the development time was spent on a multi-player mode? Now sure there are some games that can give you both a single player and a mutli-player experience that are divine in quality(like Guardian Heroes on the Saturn), but you don't see that too much these days. Typically, the single player has to suffer some sacrifices because of the multi-player mode whether it's just a lack of quality(like the last two Halo games)or you get a campaign that's actually pretty awesome, but extremely short(like Call of Duty 4).
I want to see games with single player ONLY or multi-player ONLY. I'm kind of sick of the whole, "let's make everyone happy"approach to game development. Either make the best single player adventure you can with no regard whatsoever for multi-player(like Bioshock tried to do)or make a multi-player game that kicks the ass of every other multi-player game on the market without including a campaign mode at all. When I buy a game, I buy it for the single player, but it seems like I always have to get some multi-player mode and a bunch of stupid multi-player achievements shoved down my throat too.
Ah, well... there's your problem. I personally can't have any fun with Counter Strike - it is as typical as typical gets, but it's a hit because people find it a great way to socialize and have fun with their friends.
It doesn't really appeal to me as I'm more of an introvert who tends to avoid the loud crowd.
MMO games mostly appeal to those attention whores who want to show off their level 80 armor and fancy stuff you can only buy with real money - OR just people who want to socialize with friends.
Personally, I don't like MMO games.
If it's the people that deters you from online games, you can always just create your own server, or ask a friend to, then make it password protected.
On a side note, I'm not a fan of the FPS genre. Call of Duty 4 is the only FPS game I've had fun with in a long time. The Singleplayer mode was short but the only one able to hold my attention in an FPS game for that long. The online mode is, in my opinion, the best in any FPS game to date - though I only ever play with one other person.
I'm surprised at how many next-gen fanboys there are here. Saying games were better isn't some nostalgia syndrome, it is common sense from people who actually played those games, both then and now. I understand how younger kids might not be able to get into games from other generations, but it is alarming at how fast so many 20-somethings forgot what a good game when new shiny games started getting dangled in front of them. There are a handful of gems from the last 12 years or so, but it is mostly just a big pile of trash.
