Mother/Earthbound fans are a niche within a niche. We can't really blame a company for prioritizing proven mass market sellers over a niche product within a niche market. Zelda games sell consoles; Mother games do not. If you were the business manager, then which one would you prioritize?

So, I'm prognosticating a hypothetical SNES Classic Mini will have either 15 or 20 games on it. And here's my guess as to which titles we're likely to see. This is totally guessing, so I may be completely wrong, but I've tried not to let my personal preferences interfere too much, and I've tried to consider Nintendo's mindset and past behavior with these selections. The only thing I'm totally leaving out is that there's likely to be a sports game on the list somewhere, but I have no idea what would be appropriate.

15 title list

First-party (Nintendo)
Super Mario World
Pilotwings
F-Zero
Super Metroid
Zelda: Link to the Past
Super Punch Out
Donkey Kong Country
Kirby Super Star
Super Mario Kart
Wario's Woods
Mario Paint

Third-party
Super Ghouls and Ghosts
Street Fighter 2 Turbo
Super Castlevania IV
Final Fantasy II

+5 for 20 title list

First Party (Nintendo)
Earthbound
Kirby's Avalance

Third Party
Actraiser
Bust a Move
Contra III

One of the Ken Griffey games that Nintendo published I'd say, assuming the rights aren't an issue.
NBA Jam if they can work multi-tap (or similar) support in.

Mario Paint seems like an odd inclusion, since part of that would come down to input device support. On the other hand, actual mouse support could also allow for including Super Scope titles.

Super Tennis would seem like the most likely sports inclusion, seeing as it's unlicensed and by Nintendo themselves.

Super Tennis or Super Tecmo Bowl I would presume are two of the most likely sports titles. And you're right. Mario Paint does have a peripheral limitation. That was one title I really waffled on. Well, a sport title could push that off the list and that problem would be eliminated.

True, I thought more of the baseball ones since they were pretty lauded at the time (or just hyped in Nintendo Power, given the stake Nintendo had in the Mariners  ).

Square has been porting its games everywhere, iOs, Android, Steam, so I there is a good chance for them to be involved.

If the SNES Classic were to only have 20 titles, and they had to be titles which Nintendo themselves published on SNES (in USA), these would be my 20 picks:

Arkanoid: Doh It Again
Donkey Kong Country
Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest
Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble
Earthbound
F-Zero
Kirby's Dream Course
Kirby's Dream Land 3
Pilotwings
Star Fox
Super Mario All-Stars
Super Mario Kart
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
Super Mario World
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
Super Metroid
Super Punch-Out!!
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Uniracers
Wario's Woods
PLAY KING'S FIELD.

Would be a very worthy inclusion, but it's also one that probably still has legal problems preventing inclusion.

I think that's a great wish list, but I also don't think it's realistically aligned with Nintendo's goals and interests. The NES Classic Mini did have a few titles from other publishers, and I don't see why Nintendo wouldn't try to tap into those same relationships for a sequel system. It also takes some of the pressure off of Nintendo to have to provide all the content.
