Re: Games You Want to Finish But Never Did
That's the sentiment you hear about Final Fantasy XIII and other overly-long modern JRPGs. Gotta stick with the retro stuff - better pacing and shorter overall playtime. You can't give up 15 hours into a game that isn't even 15 hours long.
Re: Games You Want to Finish But Never Did
Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VI, or Phantasy Star IV shouldn't give you that problem.
I do know how you feel, though. I've got lots of aborted playthroughs of JRPGs.
Anyway, this thread is what inspired my runs this weekend with Stargate and ActRaiser 2. And Super Ghouls 'N' Ghosts as well.

I'm with you Metal Jesus. Those JRPGs just take too long to get going.Metal Jesus wrote:Pretty much every Japanese RPG I start... get about 15 hours in... get bored with the grinding or the story... and then hear from gamers "Oh..it just gets GOOD after 20 hours in!!"

The grinding gets me. I don't *often* get bored with the story in a JRPG (at least not if I can make it four or five hours in), but the grinding will turn me off faster than hearing someone say "Make America Great Again."samsonlonghair wrote:I'm with you Metal Jesus. Re: Games You Want to Finish But Never Did
This year I've managed to finish of a few games that I had left unfinished in the past: Rocket Knight Adventures, Rockman & Forte, Kirby Air Ride, Billy Hatcher, Dragon Slayer - Eiyuu Densetsu, Ogre Battle, Pulseman, Daytona USA, Megaman ZX, Groove on Fight, Gyakuten Saiban 3.
One game I still haven't been able to beat, despite it being a terrific game, with a great soundtrack, is Dynamite Headdy. I love the game, but I can never get past the boss in Scene 8-5. Every time I've gotten to him, I've completed all the special stages, but I just die repeatedly, and give up for a number of months. The bosses toward the end of that game are no joke.

I don't think I've ever managed to get past the Baby Face series of bosses in the shmup stage (stage 6?)pierrot wrote:This year I've managed to finish of a few games that I had left unfinished in the past: Rocket Knight Adventures, Rockman & Forte, Kirby Air Ride, Billy Hatcher, Dragon Slayer - Eiyuu Densetsu, Ogre Battle, Pulseman, Daytona USA, Megaman ZX, Groove on Fight, Gyakuten Saiban 3.

I hear the Japanese version is notably easier.
Re: Games You Want to Finish But Never Did
Yeah, that one is difficult at first, but after some practice, is relatively easy. The gatekeeper is also really tough at first, but eventually becomes manageable. The twin freaks are probably really similar to those bosses, in that it's not nearly as difficult as it seems, I'm sure. I just get so demoralized by it after the gauntlet of those three stages.
I have also heard that the Japanese version is easier, but I think it's mainly just that it gives the player a continue or two to start with.

Re: Games You Want to Finish But Never Did
Nah, there's an awful lot of major changes. Bosses have basically all had their health doubled in the US versions, and their hitboxes are often smaller and vulnerable for a shorter time. They also made it harder to earn continues from the keymasters, so not only do you start with 2 continues instead of zero, but it's easier to get more too.pierrot wrote:Yeah, that one is difficult at first, but after some practice, is relatively easy. Some bosses, such as the Trouble Bruin fight where you're climbing the stairs, have had their mechanics changed too. In Japan, that fight has a set sequence of attacks, whereas the western version is atrocious because it's randomised and it can take 3 fucking minutes before you can get a chance to attack sometimes. And then he takes 8 hits instead of 4 too. The first Trouble Bruin fight in Japan, the orbs that fly everywhere can't hurt you.

Re: Games You Want to Finish But Never Did
See but my sentiment is life gets in the way. Especially since now i'm trying to get serious about my degree since my mom is really adamant on me finishing it, and at this point it looks like I do need it just to get started and even the foot in the door. I'm going to back transfer credits to get the associates once I transfer though. At this point I'm trying to find some relative decent balance between school, work and home. Just haven't found that yet with all the papers I've had this semester, and the whole injury thing.Metal Jesus wrote:Pretty much every Japanese RPG I start... get about 15 hours in... get bored with the grinding or the story... and then hear from gamers "Oh..it just gets GOOD after 20 hours in!!"

Some definite white whales that I will be working on though when I get time:
1.) Tales of Phantasia
I'm currently working on this one and will finish it when I can. It's probably going to end up being the testing point of balance between work, school, and life at this point.
2.) Zelda series
I've finished Ocarina and that's about it for the ones I know I have literally finished, minish cap doesn't count even though i know I was at the end
3.) FF series
the long standing white whale especially since coming here, I might pick up tactics on the go and see what happens from there. I'm not sure at this point with this one. I've started 1 so many times only to get distracted or busy. I will finish it though one of these days. Espeically once I get stuff set up better to accomadate playing it on vita or whatever device I end up playing it on. I'm just not going to accept being nagged/trolled into playing it. I'm too burnt out on the whole idea to even consider it.
4.) DK64
freaking love this game but everytime I get going good i get stuck or busy
5.) Super mario series
I've beat the first(using pipes from memory of seeing others in real life use them) and galaxy(not 100% but good enough to count) but have yet to devote the time to truly finish others i've started. These include a lot of the spin offs(except maybe M&L:SSS I may have beat it but not sure)
There's plenty of others but just those is enough to keep me busy at attempting.

I looooove that game! Definitely my favorite game on Genesispierrot wrote:One game I still haven't been able to beat, despite it being a terrific game, with a great soundtrack, is Dynamite Headdy. It's still one I go back and beat every now and then. Did it not too long ago (I think it was after someone here was talking about how hard it was), and that game is always harder than I remember it being XP
Who's the boss of scene 8-5? Is that Dark Demon?
