So another unsuccessful re-attempt at the great bloodbath of 2013, then?

In the past I'd get too emotionally attached to the suggested games. I like how we did it last year. I think I'll watch from a distance for now.

(and FFS, if we're gonna do it like it's 2013, please exercise some control if the shit gets out of hand like it did then, ok?)

Surely this is the year Oddworld: Abes Odyssey gets in?

Seems like it. I'm not too keen on either to be honest, but you can't win 'em all!

R-type, Metal Slug and Oddworld have all been backed a bit too.

Personally, I'm really pushing for either one of my platformer suggestions, one of my shmups (preferably the Turbografx Thunder series) and Pokémon.

Pokémon just seems like such an obvious choice to me - widely available, lots of decisions we can discuss as a forum around pokemon choice and movesets, a reasonable length (about 15-20 hours for a new player maybe? At a push?) It was one of the games that defined the Game Boy, it is one of the games that defines portable gaming as a whole and it's absolutely one of the most defining RPG series out there. And definitely the best selling one.

actually what I'm aiming for is the days when we could all keep our Big Boy Pants on in these threads. It was great - and actually it feels like it's going well so far this year. We'd brainstorm ideas and sort of casually up-vote/down-vote until a calendar kind of made itself. It would usually come together naturally and not drag on too long. It wouldn't require a bunch of superlative threads for polling. In short, it was fun and had a great community feel to it. So if we can keep it up as here, it'll be fun again.

Look here: viewtopic.php?f=33&t=40008

^we all (including you!) managed to come to an agreement in one week with no bickering. And the calendar came out really good, too.

I'm not a big fan of R-Type personally, but I contend that it is a classic and it has been ported to like everything ever. So it's probably a really good pick.

Oddworld has certainly been lobbied for for the past few years, so I guess I wouldn't be surprised if it got in. I'm kind of indifferent on that one.

Also, I know your pushing for Bonk, but so far with Pitfall getting much love I feel like we won't want to do 2 platformers in the same year...

All good points.

In the interest of moving forward, everyone's thoughts on these:

1. Star Control II (space sim thing?)
2. Pitfall (platformer)
3. R-Type (shmup)
4. Metal Slug (run-n-gun)
5. Pokemon red/blue/yellow (RPG)
6. Oddworld (weird looking adventure thing?)

^what do you love? What do you hate? What genres would you like to see up there as well? Etc?

I like the thought of people's input openly on the thread, I'm in for whatever. Going through the past lineups it all seems pretty varied and interesting, I'd say as long as it's all picks from 5th gen and prior as a nice rule of thumb and games can be found on modern consoles are a plus.

So far from what's up in the air I really like Oddworld for a chance and Metal Slug as well. Honestly debating on picks and personal point of views seems kinda fun when deciding, who doesn't like drama and how can you take it so seriously, I think it adds character to the topic it's not like we're voting for president. I think the people who actually involved will actually play as to anyone just throwing a vote in a poll.

Oh and I meant to add - October has traditionally been our Horror Month. Ack has suggested a few titles and nobody's really commented one way or the other. Thoughts, y'all?

Alone in the dark new nightmare, Clock Tower, Echo Night?

I'd like to see Ack's full thoughts, is Shadowgate dark and creepy enough to be considered for October?

I'm drawing a blank.yikes!!

If we want to do an actual horror game, Fatal Frame 2 has been released on PS2 and Xbox worldwide, Wii in Japan and Europe, and maybe PSN too in America?

These are all good picks.

Star Control II is a classic game; it is a lot of fun; it has a lot of depth; and it is easy to find. (You can download an upgraded remake - The Ur-Quan Masters - for free.) I would vote for it.

Pitfall! is a good choice, but I do not think it will keep people occupied for a month. I would pair it with some other classic Activision games like Kaboom! and H.E.R.O.

R-Type is my very favorite shmup; so, I obviously think it is a great choice.

Metal Slug is a great game, and it is easy to find a port. Moreover, people can play it and its numerous sequels during that month. Accordingly, I would vote for it.

I am not a huge Pokemon fan, but I have played the originals (i.e., Blue/Red/Yellow). They are really fun RPGs, and although I never went for the sequels, I recommend them.

Oddworld is a great choice. It is one of the best cinematic platformers (like Another World or Flashback), and it is often included on "best games of all time" lists. I also still need to beat it; so, if you pick this game, I will participate that month. (The forum often picks games I have already beaten; so, my participation in the "together retro" threads is a bit spotty.)

.....

With regard to horror games, I think it would be great to play Alone in the Dark. It is the grandfather of survival horror games, and I just got it running on DSx86.

I thought of a classic that is conspicuously missing from the master list:

DOOM - What needs to be said? Obviously a classic, incredibly fun too play, ported to everything (I personally have the PS1 version). This would definitely keep people busy for a month, it's got tons of levels and well-hidden secrets. It could even be the October game maybe?

I agree. I suggest including Pitfall II: The Lost Caverns, and H.E.R.O, which is similarly themed: descending into a tunnel/cavern.
