95% of YouTube videos related to gaming are of a Minecraft nature. So much so that it literally bogs down the front page in the gaming section. Without racketboy I would have never discovered fine shows like Game Sack and shows from Metal Jesus. AND IF YOU BLAME THEM I WILL DEFEND THEM TO THE DEATH (internet death, not real death; lets not get carried away here).Exhuminator wrote:Personally I blame Youtube and all the retro gaming shows there though.casterofdreams wrote:I blame the Wii.

Metal Jesus at least often covers contemporary systems.

Re: Game collecting is not what it once was
I can't tell honestly if this is a disagreement. I just checked as it has been awhile through the YouTube app and things have changed. I remember a few months ago (possibly due to how the app was laid out) that when I went to the gaming section, Minecraft was dominating the featured section. Now that is not the case. I rarely use a PC for YouTube. It may be different on there.Exhuminator wrote:Ha ha yeah no.casterofdreams wrote:95% of YouTube videos related to gaming are of a Minecraft nature.

Minecraft nuts aren't buying all the retro games up or watching the retro shows.
Here's a few of those shows for you:
https://encyclopediadramatica.se/Video_Game_Reviewers (some NSFW stuff there...)
http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/8-retro-ga ... uo-gaming/
People watch those shows by the boatload, and many of them focus on classic games. As such many viewers become inspired to buy up the retro classics ad infinitum. But if you want to pretend that's not reality that's your choice and I'm fine with that.

Hey hey I'm not disagreeing with ya at all about the correlation between the retro marketplace to retro YouTube shows. I can't comment on the topic because I don't know too much about it in general.
I'm just pointing out that at one point I couldn't find shows through YouTube's front page as an off-comment. I'd have to search for it (then subscribe) or have a link sent to me (like what you did).

I don't think Youtube videos necessarily lead to people picking up the hobby but I do think they serve as a gateway for someone who's just starting to collect to venture deeper into the hobby. And that's not necessarily bad.
Re: Game collecting is not what it once was
I stopped playing/collecting from about early 2012 to late 2014, and returning I've noticed they prices of any first party or well received game is ridiculous. I remember buying ducktales 2 (loose) for 50 dollars in 2011, and even then I was somewhat overpaying. Looking at completed auctions its about 130 now. I was looking at a few uncommon games and things like Journey to Silius was 5 dollars, is now 25, Felix The Cat was 15, now 45. It seems to mostly be Nes/Snes/N64 but Turbografx in particular is ridiculously expensive compared to just a few years ago. I'd probably not bother buying half the games I have currently if I had to buy them in 2015.

I know this has been posted a hundred and one times, but...ugh.

Re: Game collecting is not what it once was
I'm pretty sure if you wanted to buy new copies of snes games, that number wouldn't be quite right. And why does the original price of the games matter? I'm comparing this to late 2000's to early 2010's, you know when racketboy had the most traffic.
A 400% increase in a loose copy of a game in 3 years is a bit dramatic, unless you disagree, of course.
Edit: Oh wow I can get a used copy of a game with a broken label, filled with sharpie marks, no case or manual for only HALF the cost of what a brand new copy used to cost, adjusted to inflation! I'm so privileged!
