Re: Gamer Gate
Dave you are focusing on the wrong things. It isn't about that woman. She was only the catalyst that helped show a bunch of other shady underhanded stuff.

Re: Gamer Gate
So video game journalism is where we draw the line on ethical reporting behavior?
I'm not sure where to even start on that. Slut shaming hardly seems like a good way to provide a relevant counter argument to feminism though. If she isn't the issue, why bring her up? Also, who cares who she engages in relations with?
For the record I vote for "I don't give a shit."

Zoe QThere are three entities involved in the alleged crime, Phil Fish’s Polytron, the Indie Games Festival, and an organisation to give grants to developers called ‘Indie Cade’. The basic gist behind it is that Indie Cade originally gave Phil a large sum on money to jumpstart Fez. Indie Cade and Polytron then took seats as major judges in the 2011 and 2012 Indie Games Festival, boosting its chances to succeed and gain the publicity to make the title the major hit it became. Since Fez won best in show for both those years (the first time the game hadn’t even been completed), one can assume the plan was a success. It’s worth noting though that the investigation is still very much ongoing, and no formal charges have been made.
-Publicly stating profits will go to charities, then never giving the charity the money
-Ruining a Game Jam, then starting your own game jam the very same day
-Donations for that game jam go directly into personal Paypal account
-Sabotaging a competing Game Jam which was being held for charity
Journalists from all over
-Donating money to a source (Ask Keith Olbermann what happened when he donated money to a source)
-Inappropriate relationship with a source (Ask Jason Felch, Steve Phillips and many more about what happens when you do that)
-Lack of disclosure or recusement when writing a story about a source one is financially or personally tied to (other journalists have been fired for less)
-Forcing a narrative that makes an enemy out of their own audience (I don't understand how a sane person could do this)
Still working out where exactly Silverstring Media fits into all this. We do know that Silverstring's Maya doxxed Fine Young Capitalists, and they are connected to most the people and organizations involved, but they're still a mystery.

It's not that she's having sex, it's who she's having sex with.jp1 wrote:So video game journalism is where we draw the line on ethical reporting behavior?

Honestly, this isn't even about the sex. Sex doesn't really matter. What does matter is that she is using her personal relationships to get favorable coverage, awards and other advantages that allow her game to tower over others.
Keep in mind - Depression Quest won an award over Papers Please. Compare the two games and tell me that seems fair in any way.
Even still, it's not that she should be held to the fire. Sure, she doesn't have an ethical bone in her body, but indie developers don't have a code of ethics.
Journalists do, however. And if you want your awards to actually mean anything (and still get entry fees), organizations like the IGF and IndieCade would do well to enforce a code of ethics as well.
At the end of the day, if she's willing to take any unfair advantage she can and not give a shit where it's going to put her name, more power to her. Don't hate the hustle. Everybody else involved, however, has priorities other than just getting the almighty dollar.

Re: Gamer Gate
Depression Quest didn't get any more press than any other random indie game with a quirky theme. I don't understand this whole "controversy" other than it gives a bunch of half wits a platform to get mad at nothing and say some repugnant things in the process.

Alright, well, the main guy in question on this, Nathan Grayson, wrote two articles featuring Zoe Quinn, one on Kotaku and one on RockPaperShotgun.J T wrote:Depression Quest didn't get any more press than any other random indie game with a quirky theme. I'm not familiar with RPS, maybe they are a small site and don't have a whole lot of writers, but are you seriously going to say he shouldn't have passed the story off to someone else while he was at Kotaku? Having spent at least eight years on that site, I can guarantee there was at least one writer there that was equally qualified and wasn't close to the source.
Moreover, when Totilo found out, even with Grayson admitting to it, he claimed that he had no problem with Grayson not recusing himself of the story because they weren't in a 'romantic' relationship at that point - even though there's clear evidence that they were in a 'close personal' relationship at that point in the form of pictures and YouTube videos uploaded before the article publication.
Not that many articles? Okay. But this isn't baseball, you don't need three strikes and three outs.
But hey, whatever. I'm just a half-wit, right? Clearly you are open to discussion.
Whole thing would have blown over if it weren't for the mass censorship, honestly.
