i think i'm at the endgame or so...this has really been a blast, so much love for the classic prior games here too; not to spoil but you should expect to see reimaginings of most of the arcade/genesis bosses/big fights, so great. i got a lotta exploring to do to find the other striders, though.

Re: New Strider Game on the Way!

I've finally played and beaten the game last week and have quite a bit to say about it. I'll post my thoughts in the Games Beaten 2014 thread and for now I'll just respond to the other posts in this thread.

Sort of.

According to the Character Intel, that is the gorilla.

Eh, close enough I guess.

The ball turrets (in addition to the eagle and panther) are incorporated into this entry.
Gamerforlife wrote:Right off the bat you're already dealing with cheap hits from enemies with guns. I remember seeing in a youtube video that you can nullify or reflect shots with your weapon, but apparently you don't start the game with that ability. Lame

I'm not a fan of cheap hits, especially this early in the game. That's not what I personally consider polished gameplay
...Where?

I know hashiriya1 already said this, but it's not like Strider 1 & 2 were deep either.
Sload Soap wrote:I'm not sure if the Metroid approach meshes well with what was a very fast paced arcade game though I get it's there to boost playtime.
After playing through it, I can say that the Metroidvania style does mesh well with Strider. Even when I was backtracking to find extra stuff, I never felt bored or like the action really died down.
Sload Soap wrote:I like the graphics and the jump arc is near enough spot on.
Yeah, I didn't notice it until I beat the game, but when you don't have/use the double jump the long jump animation is identical to the flip in the original Strider. :D
Stark wrote:They already did the Metroid approach with the NES game, so it's not like this is new.
I don't know if I'd consider the NES Strider a Metroidvania title since there's a Stage Select screen.

I have an issue with Gamerforlife's post in the Games Beaten 2014 thread.
Gamerforlife wrote: ...The game's okay. It's competant, as action games go, but there's nothing special or noteworthy about it. I could have designed this thing in a day.
I'm sorry if I come across as an asshole, but this part of the post makes you sound incredibly ignorant. NOTE: This is the part that I have issue with and I have no problem with the rest.
There's not a whole lot of skill or strategy to the gameplay. A fairly good chunk of the game is just you mashing buttons and watching things die.
Strider 2 was like this as well.
Sure, you'll take hits in the process, but there's health items everywhere.
This is true, and it bothered me as well.
The controls are bit too slippery at times, and the soundtrack is mediocre.
I disagree with you on both points, here. The only issue I had with the controls was a difficulty with grabbing ledges, but that was pretty rare. While I don't think I'll be jamming the soundtrack in my car anytime soon, I don't think it was mediocre as it fits well with the action.
There's hardly any story to speak of.
Again, like Strider 2.

^ If you want it got a physical release on PS3 in Japan and the game is fully in English. I love the game so damn much. I have a framed poster on my wall of this game.

Nice writeup, PresidentLeever. It's a shame Double Helix's reputation sours most people's interest in this game. This isn't just their best work, it's a pretty good game overall.

Here's a nice oddity I found in the (30fps) PS3 version. During the late-game bit where you're in the thrusters (The area where you have to go fast to avoid the waves of flames.), you can see empty space in the environment. Just go left towards the origin of the flames until you reach the wall/grating. In the upper left, there's a square space the developers didn't bother finishing. It's actually quite easy to reach, and I wouldn't be surprised if people went that way looking for secrets (like I did). It's just black space with the distant background visible, but, hey, a find's a find.

I'm probably not explaining it well, but that part stuck out to me. I wasn't expecting an unfinished chunk where the player could easily see it.

Man, I really was under a rock these last few years!
So is the Japan PS3 the only physical release?
