The upgraded Ice Rod isn't too useful as a weapon, but it's great for the dungeon that you need the Ice Rod in to progress. And I had the same path of upgrading stuff; first I did the Zelda staples like the Boomerang and the Bow and did several of the rods last. But when I first tried out the upgraded Fire Rod on some enemies it was like "why didn't I do this sooner?"
Boomerang was pretty useless in this game IMO. Upgraded Wind Rod and Fire Rod are the way to go.

Boomerang was amazing. On demand stunning of every enemy is fantastic.

I just used the hookshot or wind rod. I guess the nice boomerang was three, but I never used it.

Finally started playing this and I am instantly hooked.
Just got the Master Sword, and now I'm just kinda exploring, seeing what about the world is different. The item use system is interesting, how you have to be mindful of your meter while using them.

If you have the upgraded hammer, you could just pound the ground close enough to enemies and stun them that way. You don't even need aim, you just need to be in range, and it effects multiple enemies and not just one at a time. Still, swinging the hammer is slow. I use the boomerang most of the time. It's almost permanently set to Y, with whatever other item I happen to need at the time set to X.
