I love arcade compilations. You get so much bang for your buck. I never feel ripped off after buying one.
Some of the best, IMO:
-Capcom Classics Collection Vol. 1 & Vol. 2
-Metal Slug Anthology
-Midway Arcade Treasures 1, 2, & 3
-Samurai Shodown Anthology (does it bother anyone else that they spell "showdown" wrong in their title?)
-SNK Arcade Classics
-Street Fighter Anniversary Collection
-Street Fighter Alpha Anthology
-Tecmo Arcade Classics
There are other collections I love (Mega Man Anniversary, Super Mario All-Stars, Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection, etc.), but they aren't "arcade" collections.

I agree, they're the bees knees for sure. There is a larger list floating around here. I'd throw in Taito Legends 1 & 2 for sure, as well as the Konami MSX compilation, Konami Classics, and the four disc Namco PS1 set.
Liking them so much is why I started this thread, to see what console ports I wouldn't need to get.

This is a solid collection I suppose, but when I played it on Ps2 it seemed like there was some bad input lag. I don't really ever see anyone else mention it, so maybe it's just me, but the games for whatever reason felt less responsive than they did on MAME.BurningDoom wrote:-Metal Slug Anthology
MAT 2 is the only one of those I've played. The emulation is pretty hit and miss, and the MK games sound like the audio has been downsampled. They're kinda scratchy sounding.-Midway Arcade Treasures 1, 2, & 3
I think the engrish adds a certain charm to the series. One of the games actually says "VICTOLY!"-Samurai Shodown Anthology (does it bother anyone else that they spell "showdown" wrong in their title?)
Such a good compilation. If not for the lack of 240p support (something most people probably wouldn't care about anyway) it'd be absolutely perfect.-Street Fighter Alpha Anthology
Not trying to be too nitpicky or anything BD, just kinda some thoughts. In general, I really like arcade compilations too, at one point I was seriously considering nabbing all of the Ps2 ones out there.

Oh yeah, Taito Legends 2 is well worth the price for Darius Gaiden and G-Darius alone. And then there's a number of other great shmups on there, too, and other gems.o.pwuaioc wrote:I agree, they're the bees knees for sure. There is a larger list floating around here. Were there not 5 discs (N,A,M,C,O) in the PS1 Museum set?o.pwuaioc wrote:I agree, they're the bees knees for sure. There is a larger list floating around here. I'd throw in Taito Legends 1 & 2 for sure, as well as the Konami MSX compilation, Konami Classics, and the four disc Namco PS1 set.
The only issue I have with MAT 2 on the Gamecube was with Wizard of Wor -- the game runs MUCH faster than originally intended, making it totally unplayable. I believe that game is also busted on the PS2 port. The PC port fixes that issue, but then made Hard Drivin with it's "simulation" type steering unplayable. Plus, there was a bug with missing sound in nearly *all* the games at release. A patch was quickly put out.AppleQueso wrote:MAT 2 is the only one of those I've played. 1/3 of TL2 is shmups, it's great for me. Such great titles. Rayforce, Gun Frontier, Metal Black, Insector X, Gekirindan, Grid Seeker, Darius Gaiden, 2 modern updates to Space Invaders, a ton of great beatem ups, and even older stuff like Front Line and Lunar Rescue. I'm referring to the PC port, which doesn't have (sadly) G-Darius and Raystorm. At least we got Rayforce.BurningDoom wrote:Oh yeah, Taito Legends 2 is well worth the price for Darius Gaiden and G-Darius alone. Holy crap, awesome! I'll have to pick those all up.ExedExes wrote:There were 3 versions of SFRush in the arcadesXeogred wrote:I always bring these racers up, even if I grew up with the N64 versions, I'm sure the arcade versions of Rush (Alcatraz Edition, not sure if those were two separate arcades?) and 2049 are superior to the N64 ports. I think the PSX had a port of the first Rush too which definitely had very limited graphics and crazy loading.
The DC port of 2049 vs the arcade however, I'm not sure how that'd stack up. Both have a much better framerate/resolution than the N64 one though.
I think Rush (2) USA was N64 exclusive?
- The original (received PS1 & N64 ports)
- The Rock Alcatraz Edition (Midway Arcade Treasures 3 PC/Xbox/PS2)
- 2049 (received PS1/N64/GBC/DC ports and console port also appears on MAT3)
I can tell from experience the original PS1 Rush port was a hot mess. The track graphics had a lot of breaks and tears and the car graphics didn't look so good either.
2049's N64 port was pretty nice, and I believe the DC port was used in the Midway Arcade Treasures 3 compilation. Lots of extra features and modes. Rush The Rock made also made it onto MAT3, close to arcade perfect, a big feat for a game that used a hard drive for storage.
Rush 2 USA I believe was a console-exclusive sequel to N64.
Can we all assume that the PS2 is hands down the console for arcade compilations? heh, damn there is so much I need to get.
o.p: Didn't we have a thread or list somewhere of all the good PS2 compilations? Can't remember...

Re: Arcade Compilations and Console Ports
I forgot to mention MAT3 is also available for the Gamecube. I'll edit my original post. I think some of the music is different in Rush: The Rock, and the classic "Checkpoint!" voice has been altered. I only say this to retain the spirit of the "arcade perfect" experience.Xeogred wrote:Can we all assume that the PS2 is hands down the console for arcade compilations? heh, damn there is so much I need to get.
Rush 2 USA *was* a console exclusive N64 sequel. Confirmed it earlier.
PS2 is a good home for many arcade compilations, but keep in mind the game selections for Taito Legends 2 are different on the PS2 as they are from the Xbox & PC ports. The PS2 Taito Legends 2 has G-Darius and Raystorm, for they were running on PS1 hardware in the arcade. Syvalion and Balloon Bomber are also exclusive to the PS2 port. On the Xbox/PC ports, the 4 exclusive titles are Rayforce, Cadash, Puchi Carat, and Pop'n Pop.

Re: Arcade Compilations and Console Ports
Anyone mention the KOF Collection? I thought all the games on it played pretty well.
