yeah I figured that out right after posting it. I don't think I even played V-V much... here's what I could find me saying about it:
the first build I had was ShmupMAME 3.0b. It worked fine. Until about 3 days later when it refused to open. At all. The program gave me an error code something like cx0000005 if I remember. I google'd and found this was a weird Win7 security issue and and found a walkthrough to fix it. Hours wasted. Didn't work. Other forums had people saying the same thing. 3.0b will selectively work or not work at all on Win7 64-bit.
Second I tried WolfMAME. It didd'nt have a ROM folder like you mention. So I put one in there. But it woulndn't find the ROM's. 20 mins later I went looking for something else.
I believe I next tried a diff build of WolfMAME found on the Twin Galaxies site or somehow connnected to TG. It had a self-installer and was meant to be easier. It launched Strikers 1999 and froze.
So then I dug through the 1999 thread on Shmups and found another MAME build mentioned and raved about (forget what it was called... MAMEUA or something?) and downloaded it. Installed. Launched.... froze up altogether.
Finally found that using ShmupMAME 2.2 has been working for Strikers and this game, but without sound on V-V. But after you can read the night I wasted above just trying to Start a fucking game, there's little appealing to me about trying another build of MAME just for a month-long contest.
And ya know what? This game might as well only be two levels, because that's all I ever see. Coast through to the 2nd boss and lose all 3 lives on him. Fun.
...so yeah, still sounds like I hated V-V.

For verts - Toaplan - Truxton/Tatsujin is one of my favorite games of all time, also the Genesis game my family has had the longest. But Batsugun and Zero Wing are also awesome.
For horis - Konami - Mostly for the Parodius franchise, Parodius Fantastic Journey specifically
Runnerups:
Zun - Perfect Cherry Blossom is, to me atleast, the epitome of vert bullethells. However the majority of his games, post Scarlet Devil, play so similarly. PCB is the game that got me back into shooters though.
Cygnus Studios - Raptor Call of the Shadows
Cave - DDP and Progear mostly.
Temco - Raiden series.

I really like V-V. I don't think I would like to play it for score though.
+1 for the Capcom support. Forgotten Worlds, 1941, Area88 and Varth are some CPS1 classics.

If so, then yeah. I hate V-V.
That's Strikers X-36 (aka '99/III

This is V-V (I played it again for the benefit of the community!)

The biggest issue was no sound/music in early MAME builds; it wasn't implemented until version 0.141u1.
For America and for the Genesis port, it was known as Grind Stormer, which completely did away with the powerup system and gave you bombs and powerups at points where you'd pick the special jewels up instead -

Hope that clears it up now.

Isn't there a V-V mode in Grind Stormer on the GEN, though? There's at least a Grind Stormer mode and V-V mode in the Japanese home release. (Kind of like Slap Fight MD.)

Temco didn't do Raiden Seibu Kaihatsu did the originals and 3 and 4 were done by Moss. Moss also did the HORRIBLE KOF Skystage.
Also, I played Truxton yesterday, the arcade version through mame. I found it to be...
well easy.

After I posted this, I went and saw a YouTube video on this, and it appears that Grind Stormer does enable you to play in GS mode (power ups and bombs) or V-V (power up bar) -- pretty nice feature that not many ports do.
