Japan Only RPGS for NES/SNES/Gen/Saturn/DC
Re: Japan Only RPGS for NES/SNES/Gen/Saturn/DC
So on that note I know you've been burning through them I think, do you have a recommended list of what versions to tackle for each game? Since it sounds like a lot of them have gotten ports/remakes all over.

www.hardcoregaming101.net does this for the games they cover.KoLAddict wrote:I liked the screenshot comparison of the three versions of Ys III. Wish there was a website that had that for all video games that are on multi-consoles just to help compare between them. Especially in the SNES/Genesis era games randomly looked better on one or the other.

I'm finding it interesting that the Genesis resolution seems a bit wider than the SNES in a lot of comparison shots for many games. Is there a technical difference?

Snap thanks. I didn't know that at all.Nemoide wrote:Actually, the Albert Odyssey game for the Saturn was "Albert Odyssey Gaiden" (side story) in Japan. So the Saturn game is the third in the series and is not a direct sequel to the first two; I'm pretty sure the first two are centered around a guy named Albert.KoLAddict wrote:Have any of you played Albert Odyssey 2 for Super Famicom? I've played the original on Saturn and it was great. Wondering if this one has any similar characters or anything from the original.

Far as I've read, the Genesis used the 320x224 (or 240 for PAL) resolution for a lot of games, whereas the SNES nearly always used 256x224 or 239. Technically, the chip in the SNES could output much higher resolution, but the system lacked the oomph to support it.Xeogred wrote:I'm finding it interesting that the Genesis resolution seems a bit wider than the SNES in a lot of comparison shots for many games. The difference in horizontal resolution would be fairly noticeable when not presented on a TV with overscan eating parts of the picture regardless.

So that would basically mean that in the SNES vs Genesis argument, games would look better (usually) on the Genesis then the SNES?

...It doesn't take at all into account the fact that the SNES could display more colors onscreen and all kinds of hardware based graphical effects, among other things.KoLAddict wrote:So that would basically mean that in the SNES vs Genesis argument, games would look better (usually) on the Genesis then the SNES?

Yeah it's really not that complex. It's the first three games that have a bunch of ports, but a large number of them are on ancient computers (and some of those are Japanese only of course).Xeogred wrote:I guess it's not as complicated as I thought, lol. *saves list*
It's also worth noting that there was never a stand-alone Ys II released in the US. If you want to play it (in English) you're gonna have to get a Book I/II compilation.
Both Ys IVs have translated ROMs. Not sure about Ys V, it may only be playable in Japanese.
Ys Typing Tutor has an unofficial English translation too.
There's a couple side games as well. Ys Origin has an English version on Steam, though you can buy a Japanese or Chinese retail copy and apply a patch. Ys Strategy was never released in the US, but the PAL version is in English.
The Ys/Trails in the Sky fighting game and the Ys MMO are only available in Japan...
