!* YO YO YO *! - Need pics of your AC/DC adapters!
Re: Yo! Look ever HERE! - Need pics of your AC/DC adapters!
I'm bumping this thread for any one who hasn't seen it yet. I'll start putting the guide together when I get the chance, but keep the pics coming in the meantime!
Re: Yo! Look ever HERE! - Need pics of your AC/DC adapters!
Oh, shit. Are Saturn and Dreamcast power cables interchangeable? Can someone tell me which originally went with which?

Geez, my camera's macro setting really makes my stuff look nasty.

Re: Yo! Look ever HERE! - Need pics of your AC/DC adapters!
there's no difference. only on the inside of the consoles.
I've used saturn/ps1/dreamcast all together before.
saves me time from plugging and replugging from the strip behind the tv.
Hey ZIGGY, with Sabrage's topic ^
You need the revised ORIGINAL XBOX plug.
The one that came out for a while when the xboxes had a plug overheating(?) problem.
I've seen them before but I dont own one. Maybe an online search or someone here has one?

I have an OXbox cable sitting right here; it has a massive ferrite choke near the end. How can I tell if it's the remodel or not?
I'd still like to know which cable originally went with which system. I'm assuming the one on the left is for the Saturn, judging by the design of the plugs, but I can't tell for sure.

I thought the ferrite choke was on the PS1 cords, not the Xbox ones. Did I get that mixed up when setting up my consoles, or are they all completely interchangeable?sabrage wrote:I have an OXbox cable sitting right here; it has a massive ferrite choke near the end. Well, none of these cables have any real identifying features... I got my OXbox second-hand, so it very well may be from something else.o.pwuaioc wrote:I thought the ferrite choke was on the PS1 cords, not the Xbox ones. PS1 and 2, Dreamcast, Saturn, and many other electronics all have that same power chord. The part that you plug into the console (or boombox or whatever) is keyed, one side is squared and the other side is rounded. Example:

There is absolutely NO difference between the power cable for the PS1 and the Saturn.
The oXbox power cable isn't keyed, you can insert it either way (IIRC, I got rid of my Xbox a few months ago). Looks like this:

(Highlight then copy and paste the link, it wont work with IMG or URL tags because the address has brackets in it).
If you guys are saying the oXbox came with the same type of power cable that the PS1 has, then I'm guessing earlier Xboxs had that cable but newer ones didn't (they might have revised the PSU or something). I know that the Xbox that I used to own did NOT have the same cable as the PS1, it had the style pictured above.
I remember the recall, mainly because I remember my friend telling me about it and showing me the new power chord. I never really read into it, but looking at the replacement power chord I made some guesses. I don't know if it's a problem with the Xbox's internal PSU, or if some how the original power chords were faulty, or a combination of both, but I'm assuming that they would overheat and cause a short which in turn can cause smoke and possibly fire.
It's the same reason why you can't strand more than 2 or 3 christmas light sets together anymore. People would strand 20 sets together and feed them all through an old, thin extension chord that wasn't rated for the power that's being pulled through it. So it would heat up and melt the insulation between the hot and neutral which would create a short. Sparks and fire are a result of this. So now these lights sets have fuses in the plugs. If you strand more then 3 sets together the fuses in the plugs will blow.
So I'm guessing that's the problem with the original Xbox power chords. Again, I don't know if the internal PSU had some fault that pulled too much power through the original cable, or if the original cable had some kind of manufacturing fault, or both, but I'm pretty sure this was what the result of the problem was. Most of my reasoning comes from looking at the replacement power chord...

Looks like a GFCI outlet, or that thing on your blow dryer. If you have an electrical outlet in your bathroom, it should be a ground fault circuit interrupter. It's code, so if you don't for some reason, you wont be able to sell your house until you get one. You want one anyway, since it's there to protect your life. If you're not familiar with them, you can read about them here:
http://home.howstuffworks.com/question117.htm
Understanding how they work, you can get a good idea about the replacement Xbox chord. The original Xbox power cable was just a wire, but the replacement wire has the GFCI thing on it like a blow dryer does. If the hot and neutral lines short, the plug will trip itself to prevent fire and all that stuff. OR, if the problem was with the internal power supply, if the PSU starts to pull too much power or something, the replacement power chord will trip.
What was the question again?
Anyways, like I said, when I finally put the guide together I'll be covering all this stuff. It wont just be a list of power adapter specs, it'll be a guide on all things power supply related. I'm gonna try and write it so people with out any knowledge of electrical theory can understand it, for obvious reasons, but also because I don't know much about electrical theory myself.
So if you have any power supply or AC/DC adapter related questions, let me know in this thread so I know if it's something I should include in the guide.
