Except that those two lack references to everything under the sun and difficulty that hasn't been seen in four generations.

To me, references just equals gimmick if the gameplay isn't good. As for difficulty, both Dishwasher games offer up more of a challenge and require more genuine skill than Scott Pilgrim, especially on max difficulty or arcade mode. The last stage of arcade mode in Vampire Smile is a bitch. Also, try Castle Crashers on Insane mode SOLO if you want to see what hard really means.

Scott Pilgrim is basically grind stats and waltz through the game, on any difficulty. Sure, you can try playing it without stat grinding, but then you're left to deal with slow, clunky controls and gameplay and cheap enemies. The Dishwasher games and Castle Crashers play much more fluidly and intuitively.

Plus, I find the references in the Dishwasher games more funny than anything in Scott Pilgrim(The Peter Moore Achievement, the Bleep Bloop Achievement that actually mocks the whole achievement system and the Pretty Princess Achievement that makes fun of weak sauce game reviewers). Also, the sheer imagination on display in Castle Crashers trumps all of Scott Pilgrim's references

That said, I love the Scott Pilgrim movie. It deserved a better game. The only thing great about the Scott Pilgrim game is the amazing Anamanaguchi soundtrack

Haven't tried Dishwasher, but I did solo quite a bit of CC on the harder difficulty. It still didn't match up to SP, but that's probably because I never grinded in it.

I take it you're not a River City Ransom fan?

Either that or he thought it should be more original, despite the fact that SP is famous for its parodies.

No, I just think SP had crappy gameplay. I said that already. I never did play River City Ransom. I just know it by reputation

Anyway, I played through the Simpsons tonight. I had to do a search to find it on PSN. Way to not advertise Sony. I have to say, The Simpsons Arcade game holds up much better than X-Men Arcade and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. It just feels better balanced and designed. I got pretty far on just one credit. I have to try the Japanese version next. The only part I disliked was the cheap Mr. Burns fight

They're pretty much identical, gameplay-wise. I played it on my arcade stick and thought it was great, but ymmv.

Awesome, I feel the same way. About the Burns fight, you can handle him like a lot of the other bosses with well placed power attacks (or whatever they call Jump + Attack). I try to situate myself below or above him and hitting the power attack as he comes towards me.

But on the final form, he's way too fast for that. That's when I start spamming jump kicks. Takes a lot longer than power attacks would, but you should be able to pull it off without getting hit.

Also, saw this on GameFAQs, pretty neat:

On the title screen you press the classic Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A. Mr Burns says "Excellent" and a message pop ups and says "Excellent, All Items unlocked."

I just did the code for kicks and that appeared.

I tried those tactics and they didn't work out all that well. I'll give it another shot sometime. Maybe I'll have better luck. I died way too many times fighting him. Not a big deal given all the credits they give, but I always try to play these games while keeping deaths to a minimum. That's how you're supposed to play these games. Funny how a lot of game reviewers just spam credits and then complain that these games are too easy and repetitive. They're so clueless

Anyway, most of the other bosses I handled pretty well. I even managed to beat the two bosses in level 3 without even taking a single hit.

I didn't know about the Konami code, that's kind of cool

I really like this port. Playing it took me back years ago to an old bowling alley where I always would play this. The same bowling alley arcade that first introduced me to Street Fighter II, Final Fight and Magic Sword. I had many rounds of Marvel vs Streetfighter in that place too

I think I played better than I even did playing the Simpsons back then though. I always wanted to see this on PSN or Xbox Live Arcade. I can't express how awesome I think it is that is actually happened and I'm so happy that after all these years I still find this game to be a blast. No nostalgia goggles required, it's just a good beat'em up, one of Konami's best and really the only awesome Simpsons game I've ever played(including Simpsons Hit and Run)
