In the late 90's the two were pretty much equal in quality and risks the developers took, now its all cookie cutter and wishy washy. Devs spend so much time making things look pretty and pretty much ignore everything else.
As a consideration, maybe newer games just seem that way to older players because we're jaded. (IE, this).

I've read that list before, but no game has a storyline as good Planescape: Torment, that my friends is a complete fact.

Well, sure, it's highly regarded for a reason, and I'm not trying to diminish it. That said, I think people could come across a game that's similarly well done, and not appreciate it the same way for a variety of reasons.

Dammit. CRACKED.
Boredom is a young man's disease. For me, every minute I spend playing, more shit is piling up in my work inbox. No, I don't need a game that will kill time. I need a game that will give me the most possible fun in the precious few hours of spare time I get in a week. Trust me, if you ever see me reopen my World of Warcraft account, it means I probably got fired from my job.
Dammit, CRACKED.
My scheduling skills have died of dysentery; I hope to visit at least on a monthly basis.
Still, don't forget to tip your waitress.

I don't know if anyone else mentioned it, I only skimmed through the 5 pages of comments. Bear with me I'm really tired and what I say should be taken with a grain of salt, but maybe its a cultural thing? Not 100% sure how to explain my reasoning but maybe that could explain the appeal of Western style RPGs vs JRPGs. Wouldn't JRPG games cater to a Japanese cultural theme and vice versa? That would explain why I'm no fan of the JRPG genre. I want to get out there and explore like Louis and Clark. I want to see a building in the distance and go "Ah I bet there is some sweet loot somewhere over there" then venture forth onto my journey. This is why I prefer Western style RPGs. Now if someone can make sense of this garbled gaggle of thoughts and phrases, I applaud you and bequeath upon you a cookie.
