Everything in this post above this point was taken directly from PCEngineFX.com

My notes:

*BOTH the Arcade Card Pro and Arcade Card Duo will work on all Duo systems and the Super CD-ROM2. The Arcade Card Duo will NOT work on the original CD-ROM2. It requires an Arcade Card Pro for Arcade CD-ROM2 games.

**The Lazeractive will accept PACs from any region, regardless of where you got it. The PACs, as mentioned above, are not region free. The PC Engine PAC will not accept Turbografx-16 games unless it is region modded.

***The GT/Express and original Duo (both PCE and Turbo) sometimes have capacitors that leak, which will mainly affect the volume of the sound coming out of the systems. They can be replaced. If you need this done, some members of PCEngineFX.com do this for a reasonable fee. I have not heard of the other systems having this issue aside from Apolloboy mentioning it in this thread, but it is certainly possible as these consoles age.

****The original CD-ROM2 has a plastic gear inside that is of poor quality. It eventually turns a yellow colour (SNES yellowing-like. I have seen it) and eventually disintegrates. Of course, some of the guys at PCEngineFX have found a way to replace it. I personally cannot remember what it is.

*****All PC Engine HuCards work on the Super Grafx. There are five Super Grafx games that are ONLY playable on the Super Grafx. There are two PC Engine games that have enhanced graphics on it (less flicker and parallax backgrounds).

******The original PC Engine is cute and sexy. Consider replacing your girlfriend with it. If you are married, then... you know what is best already.

How playable is Ys in Japanese? (From the perspective of a Japanese-illiterate)

Ebay is pretty good. Of course I'm not looking at the super-expensive games right now.:)

If you want to save time on shipping you can filter ebay items by North America (or even just U.S.A.). Some U.S. sellers have PCE stuff at reasonable prices. Although, if you're willing to wait a couple weeks you can save a little money by buying from a Japanese seller; depending on what it is you're buying, of course.

And you can go through forums to see what people have for sale, as well.

It has quite a bit of text, which you will need to read if you want to know where to go and get hints on how to solve puzzles in the game. In other words, it is necessary to read the text. You would always play with with a walkthrough and get through it like that.

Otherwise, get the English versions. It's region free anyway, as it's a regular CD game.

...but, it doesn't come with a Duo-R controller? See if you can get one instead of the original PCE controller. You need it to match. :)

You never got me anything though CFFJR... I am disappoint!

Since this is slightly related, hope you guys don't mind me asking...but anyone have issues mounting PCE CD games on the PC sometimes? Granted I haven't tried anything beyond MagicISO, but yeah I definitely can't get CD games to work. Magic Engine is awesome and I've played some HuCard games, but I'm just dying to play some CD games. Maybe the ISO's I'm getting aren't great? I've only tried the ones out from edgeemu.net

Uh, well I wished you a happy birthday in digital form, and I genuinely meant it!

Perhaps I can send you a Mega Man cake? Help me out here bro.

Or maybe we can meet up and have a dual birthday bash. Paint the town in pixels. It'd be awfully fun to head up to Nebraska and TP my sister in law's house.

I think we can agree that October is the best fucking month of the year though eh?

As for your emulation problem, I have never been able to get CD games to work, despite constant fiddling and tweaking and trying different emulators on both PC and PSP and downloading different programs to pack things and run things and troubleshooting and yadayadayada and just going through ridiculous amounts of trouble. I have managed to get a game or two running, but they were usually a glitchy, unreliable mess, and if not that, missing sounds effects or some other weird symptom.

I eventually gave up on the whole damn thing. I know that's not very encouraging, but the whole experience left a very bad taste in my mouth.
