I'm gonna have to say the PS2/Gamecube/Dreamcast/XBox generation. Firstly, FOUR consoles that all had incredible games. My favourite console is the N64 but even though that era had more "masterpiece" games like Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time, I feel the sheer number of quality games was in the next generation. This current generation there is TOO many games of a high quality, I can't keep up.
I loved the 16 bit era, the Mega Drive was my second console after the Master System but all the games I had were side scrolling fighters or platformers. And you restarted the game every time you turned it off. I wasn't into RPGs at that age (7-10 years old) but Chrono Trigger and Metroid are games I aim to get into via the VC on Wii. This year I aim to play the SNES games I never did (or already haven't on my GBA). So who knows, I may say 16 bit era once I've experienced it properly.

I don't know. I'm torn between 16 and 32 bit eras. The RPG experiences on SNES were just epic, and there were great platformers aplenty. Yet, I'll never forget the first time I played Resident Evil late at night, and it scared the hell outta me. Also, the transition of iconic characters to the 3D realm, some successful, some not. I miss the times when a rich, compelling story, or solid, fun gameplay drew you in; not flashy visuals.
