Re: London riots
I saw a newspaper article earlier today saying the guy who supposedly fired at a police officer didn't actually shoot, though he was carrying a firearm which had apparently been modified from firing blanks to live ammunition. I figure it's probably a case of he pulled his weapon and the police freaked and fired, but let's see what the official investigation has to say.
As for the world market collapsing...well yes, but then on the other hand in the US we have a large poor population that are abusing social programs for the poor and appear to have lost the art of self reliance. I understand the need for welfare, social security, food stamps, medicare, and medicaid, but considering how large of a portion of our budget goes solely to those programs, how they've become so crippling large that we don't know how to sustain them, and how often they get abused...well, I'd say we're all living beyond our means. The rich prey on the poor and the middle class, while the poor prey on the rich and the middle class through social welfare.

Re: London riots
The real issue is whether or not poverty can be "cured" through massive governmental spending. Since the 60's, several trillion dollars have been spent to uplift the poor and close achievement gaps, and gee, it hasn't worked. And its great that we undermine our own poverty fighting tactics by letting illegal immigration go unchecked and by also issuing work visas to unskilled laborers, which demonstrably hurts the lower classes.Ack wrote: As for the world market collapsing...well yes, but then on the other hand in the US we have a large poor population that are abusing social programs for the poor and appear to have lost the art of self reliance. Re: London riots
"I am for doing good to the poor, but I differ in opinion of the means. -- I think the best way of doing good to the poor, is not making them easy in poverty, but leading or driving them out of it. In my youth I traveled much, and I observed in different countries, that the more public provisions were made for the poor, the less they provided for themselves, and of course became poorer. And, on the contrary, the less was done for them, the more they did for themselves, and became richer." -Benjamin Franklinsaturnfan wrote:The real issue is whether or not poverty can be "cured" through massive governmental spending. This, of course, is not completely infallible or anything, but I think it's usually quite true and applicable to our situation today. We'd save a lot of money if we followed his advice.

Can you believe it wasn't even over soccer?
This time anyway.
This time anyway.
