Well Wiley's Revenge only had six levels in all, so Capcom wasn't doing much better that year. Metroid II isn't all that big either--it just feels bigger than it is due to the backtracking. Ninja Gaiden Shadow from Tecmo and Natsume that same year was also only five levels. It wasn't just a Konami thing, and it wasn't unusual. It was par for the course for action games on GameBoy at the time.
Hey.... I wasn't really epic failed. There ARE only 4 robot master's stages in the first GB Mega Man!

A winner is me!
Mega Man 1 on Gameboy had 4 initial stages. But there's more in Dr. Wily's Castle and 8 Robot Masters in all.

He said stages though, don't you fight the last four in Wily's Castle?

Good game, but I haven't made it past level 4 yet.

Anyone else find the jumping (over holes) awkward?

Exactly, STAGES.

There are 16 robot masters in Mega Man 3 on the NES, but they don't all have their own stages. ;)

I thought it was weird the first few plays too, but I eventually got used to it and don't notice anymore.
