i agree 80% with this statement. i have seen videos of young kids - probably 14 years old - doing AVGN type reviews of nes games. i have seen videos of same aged kids doing "games i bought recently" videos and all the games were past AVGN reviewed games.Retrogamer0001 wrote:It was my understanding that he is largely credited with reviving old school gaming among the mainstream audience.
also, i guarantee that prices of games that AVGN has reviewed has increased. for example, i am pretty sure that the price of action 52 has increased drastically since he reviewed it. obviously, there is no way to prove the relationship between the two, but i think it is more than just coincidence. i wouldn't say that AVGN is largely credited with reviving old school gaming, but i sure do think he has had influential power on the subject matter, especially with the younger generation.
off topic, but from the interviews i have seen, i get the impression that he isn't a gamer. i just don't see him as the guy that sits at home and plays video games casually.
if you took a shit, please put it back

I enjoy some of his videos and have really hated some others. I think it hit a high point mid way and has slowly gone back down.
As far as an influence I think the only one I can truly say is that he has inspired me to find good games and truly try to enjoy and find good in all my retro games. I never want to be that "collector" (though I don't consider myself a true collector) that thinks half of his game selections are shit.
Which carries over to my video series; I want to show the joys of retro games not that games are ass because it doesn't start with a 20 min tutorial to help you beat it in 3 hours.
Like someone said earlier on I've seen a lot of people credit him with reviving retro gaming. It is obviously a load same with how his fans like to tell people that without him retro reviews wouldn't exist. There were plenty of people in the world be it on the web, tv, magazines etc talking about retro games before him and trying to do the same thing at the same time as James.

some of you may or may not know, but he is making an AVGN movie.
similar to how rocky is about boxing but the whole movie isn't a boxing match, the movie will revolve around AVGN, but it won't be a 2 hr game review. that is pretty much how he has described it.

What is there to ... do with the character?
Re: How has James Rolf (aka AVGN) influenced you as a gamer?
I definitely agree, he shows much more passion towards classic films and film making. The viral success of his first Nerd video provided an outlet for him to create his own series of short films based around the AVGN character. This marked the first time he had been paid to do something he loved, making videos. He is definitely passionate about the history and culture of retro gaming, although I've heard him in several videos say how he isn't very much into current games, he goes into this a little in his fan requested review of Castlevania: Lords of Shadow. If you check out cinemassacre.com you can see a lot of his non-Nerd related work, like his spike tv movie reviews and several short documentaries.final fight cd wrote: off topic, but from the interviews i have seen, i get the impression that he isn't a gamer. i just don't see him as the guy that sits at home and plays video games casually.
