I thought it was alright, I was just not a huge fan - I do own a copy though. The first time I played Metroid was in 87 and I had never seen anything like it. I just never got into the series. If so you might seriously be the first person I've ever met who didn't like it.
My favorite of the "Metroidvania" style games is Castlevania Circle of the Moon.
