What's the general consensus around Bloodlines from the Genesis?

It's interesting, growing up (born '79) - you always associated Castlevania strictly with Nintendo, until you realized it was Konami and not exactly a company-exclusive.

I loved SotN - one of my lifetime gaming highlights. Still pissed I lost the case and instructions (I NEVER do that - still no idea - black label and all from when it was released).

That's pretty weird given that you liked Bloodlines a lot. What about the game turned you off? It's pretty much perfection across the board. Although I guess that doesn't mean much, there are plenty of games that are hailed as the best of their genre that I don't particularly care for.
Honestly man, I can't really explain it.

You're right that everything about it is just good. I find no flaw with the game, and I honestly have no complaints.

I just... get bored. Then I put down the game and don't come back to it.

I dunno, it's weird.
I could see that. It's easy, and it's 12 hours long, if you should be on the right track to the real endings.

I personally put 1,3, 4, Bloodlines, and Rondo above it. I'm not an adventure/RPG person, and by taking elements from Metroid and RPG's, it mixes both together. It also keeps you in the castle at all times, where the games I mentioned see the Belmonts(or their cousin in the case of Bloodlines) traveling about the countryside before entering the castle.

Not sure what the general consensus is, but I thought it was just ok. A step back from Super Castlevania IV, imo.

I would imagine that most fans at least enjoyed it. I personally think it's great.

I agree that it's a step back from Castlevania IV in a couple of ways, but I like it better in general. I really love the level design in Bloodlines, and I felt that the 8-way whip present in Castlevania IV changed the gameplay too much.

I also want to add that I think Castlevania Chronicles is a great entry that's kind of overlooked when most people talk Castlevania. Anyone else really like that one?

I'd never heard of it before this topic. Now I have to check it out.

It plays like the older games, I take it?

Yeah. I would imagine most people aren't familiar with it because it's hidden in the hulking shadow of SotN being that it's the only other PSX Castlevania game, and it was originally released for some obscure Japanese home computer.

There is a hidden level select feature that allows you to continue where you left off if you don't feel like playing through it in one sitting.

Also, Dracula is a beast in this game. You've been warned!

I looked it up on youtube. Its looks fun. Looks like a remake of the original though. The first level is nearly identical.

Hey brunoafh, earlier you mentioned it was odd that I liked Bloodlines but not SOTN. Do you see a lot of similarities between the two games?

Although the first level is pretty much identical, it's not a straight up remake. It has it's own levels and what not. It has some great remixes of some of the classic tunes by the way, another thing worth noting.

No, they aren't very similar, I just meant that if someone enjoys the basic Casltevania formula, SotN should have them pretty floored by it's awesomeness. How far did you get?

Its fuzzy, but the last item I remember getting was those boots that let you jump ridiculous heights, to where you'll hit the ceiling and flip back down. I know I played a bit past that, but I don't remember the specific point where I stopped.

That's probably not very far at all, but like I said, I put the game down and... that's it. :?
