It's an old NES game. You must travel through a cave, collecting treasure and trying not to die. Why do I love it so much? BECAUSE IT'S SO DAMN HARD.
You have a limited supply of air, that runs out... you die.
You fall more than 2 feet... you die.
You walk of the elevator at the start instead of jumping... you die.

Re: games you are obsessed with and not sure why
When Tony Hawk 2 came out for the ps1 I was in college, and I spent wayyyy to much time playing that. I completed the game with every character, as in every challenge, tape, letter, etc. Unlocked all the characters, completed it with them, and I have no idea why. I've never played another tony hawk since then.
Then the other day I got THPS2 in a Dreamcast lot I won on ebay, popped it in to see what the fuss was about back then, boom, 1 1/2 hours gone. I still don't get it.

^ That's a good one. I too was obsessed with that game (it seems everybody was), but looking back on it, I have no idea why. I was never into skateboarding really. I guess it was just a fun game.

I can say the same.
I bought all of the Tony Hawk games for several years after 2, but I never played any of them as much as I did 2 on Dreamcast.
I did everything in that game. Hell, I even took the time to find all of the gaps. Madness.
I think having Spider-man as an unlockable character helped a lot in my case though.

Yeah, THPS makes something that's boring and hard in real life into a fun game. It's rare when a sports game is more enjoyable than the real thing.

I am addicted to video games, especially retro gaming from my era. I have: NES, SNES, Nintendo 64, Gamecube, Gameboy, GBA, Wii, Sega Genesis, Sega CD, Dreamcast, PS1, PS2, Xbox, and Xbox 360. I have probably over 1,000 games in total for all these systems combined. Yes, I need help and I wouldn't have it any other way! This is my passion and hey my wife still loves me!!

Totally agreed on the PS1 THPS games. Solid gameplay, great soundtrack, and especially the level editor.
Flipside on 360 indie games has been my guilty pleasure for the last year. Hours upon hours of cursing and permanent eye damage.
Picked this up awhile back just for the sake of buying it. Played a lot of it until my roommate demanded that I stopped so we could play "a better game". Someday i'll beat it.One of my favorites that no one likes... Princes Tomato in the Salad Kingdom

I had this game as a kid. I hated it and played it endlessly. I remember I bought it with my own hard earned money (which I had very little of at the time) and the graphics and sound and game length and design were all really disappointing. I wished I had bought any other number of games I had considered. And yet, I played it quite a bit. I guess I also had a strange attraction to it. It was frustrating and felt broken, but that made it feel all the more like an achievement to make it all the way through the cave.Dup wrote:Spelunker

You should play Spelunky. It's a much better game, but it has a few similarities. You can get it for free here:

For some reason, I really enjoyed Glover on the N64. I didn't have a ton of crazy games as a kid, but the ones I had, I played a lot.
Another one for the same console is Jet Force Gemini. I freakin love this game, and I don't really enjoy 1st/3rd person shooters. I can't really figure out what it is that makes me like it so much more than any other game of its kind.
There are probably a lot of N64 games that just "feel fun", even though I wouldn't be able to explain why.
Lastly, Stretch Panic for the ps2. Such a strange, easy, repetitive game, but I had fun with it. Maybe it was the ridiculous character models. There were some neat bosses too

You're not the only one, my friend!drunkn ghost wrote:I have been completely obsessed with the entire Tokyo Xtreme Racer series ever since I first played it on the Dreamcast. When the Dreamcast launched TXR was the first game I bought. I went home, hooked it up and played TXR for 23 hours straight. I still talk to my friend that was my roommate at the time and he still makes fun of me about that.
I have played the Tokyo Xtreme Racer/Import Tuner Challenge games to death. They are just so damn addictive. My buddy used to come over and we would be up into the wee hours of the morning taking turns racing dudes and upgrading our cars.
