I keep my disc-based games in DVD/CD books. I keep the cases and artwork on bookshelves for display and in case I ever decide to resell any. It's just easier to flip through all your disc-based games this way. And not all of my games have their original cases, so I figured it would get confusing to go back and forth from the actual cases and flipping through the CD booklet for games without cases.

Yes. On the other hand, in my experience they do a better job at keeping out foreign material while closed, so there should be less to scratch them up with.

Then again, high odds of moderate damage versus moderate odds of high damage isn't a great choice.

Disc binders are handy if you don't have the space to stack the boxes. You can throw away the boxes if you want, they are mass produced pieces of plastic so if you feel like recycling then go ahead and do so. If you want your games to be worth something some day then keep the boxes.

Thanks for all the opinions! This became a pretty intense discussion. I'm still not sure what the real solution here is but I will figure it out. I must get reorganized in 2011!

I think these arguments always come up when trying to trim down any thing.

Shelves
  • Pro: Expressive, convenient, safe
  • Con: Large, bulky, heavy
Sleeves
  • Pro: Cheap, small
  • Con: Needs a box or mini-binder to store all the sleeves, sleeves don't provide backing, sliding may cause radial scratching, manuals may not fit box
Slim cases
  • Pro: Small, individualized
  • Con: Slim plastic is brittle, manuals must be stored elsewhere
Spindle
  • Pro: Convenient, small, cheap
  • Con: Radial scratch potential, manuals must be stored elsewhere
Giant Binder/Wallet
  • Pro:Convenient, cheap
  • Con: Sliding may cause radial scratching, manuals may not fit
And this does not consider the cost of the rather expensive individual disc-protectors that can be snugly wrapped around a disc to protect its underside.
Any option I missed?

Still, don't forget to tip your waitress.

I don't see what's wrong with this. This is what I do. I have all my games in several of these aluminium binders. They're very sturdy and the sleeves are well padded and also sturdy (the cheap ones are usually terrible and they scuff your discs, I have a cheap plastic one for the CD-Rs in my car, I don't give a shit if they get scuffed, and boy do they get scuffed). My mum is kind enough to keep all my boxes at her house in my drawers and on my shelves. I'd love to have them all in their boxes on display, it's so convenient when you just want to choose a game. I just don't have the space where I live now.

It doesn't matter if they're nice padded ones as opposed to cheap vinyl only ones. If you get some grit in the padding it will still sit there and scratch the disc as you slide it in or out.

how 'bout one of these?

or just getting a buttload of slimline cases and sticking them in a box?

and there's another kind of cd case i've seen where it's basically a bunch of trays that the disc snaps into (just like in a jewel case) but they're all chained together and fold up into a small stack...
