Well to me it seems pretty obvious why there haven't been redesigns. Like someone else mentioned, Nintendo doesn't really put out consoles for a loss, so they don't need to redesign the systems to make them cheaper/more reliable (as opposed to the PS3 and Xbox 360). It costs a lot of money to redesign a console, which may or may not balance out with renewed interest in the system. However, starting with the N64 Nintendo discovered that just re-coloring a system can make a pretty big impact on sales, everyone wants a system in their favorite color. So you recolor a system, which is significantly cheaper than redesigning, and you release it and get basically the same response (consumer-wise), and you end up with more profit.

That's how I figure it anyway, seems to make sense to me.

New designs never caught my attention anyways. The only time it's really worth it is if there was something wrong with the original system, such as when they released the top-loader NES to fix the blinking problem with the original NES.

Redesigns are usually inferior to their original models, anyways, as a lot of them have compatibility issues with accessories, and sometimes even the games themselves. Sega Genesis models are a confusing mess due to this.

Am I the only Genesis fan who doesn't get hard over the idea of a headphone jack and a volume slider?

I think the Model 2 is much sleeker than the Model 1.

No way. The Model 1 is a sexy beast. Plus it uses the Power Unit Converter without issue.

I never got the model 1 love either. I think it's Sega's ugliest console by a country mile, and thats BEFORE adding the 32X. I much prefer the model 2.

The Master System model 1 is pretty damn ugly too mind, but the model 2 is nice. Shame it has no card slot.

OK, I'm glad it's not just me. I've seen an awful lot of people online bash on the Genesis 2, but it's actually my preferred model.

I just wish its sound was better. I'd also like a model 3 without compromising the ability to use the Sega CD

I've never heard a difference in the sound when using composite A/V cables. Plus I get my sound through the Sega CD now, so I'm not sure it would even matter.
