I think a lot of us loved the 90's was because every new game or console had an additional thing
I mean just think of the graphical jumps between snes->psx->Dreamcast

Every new console or game had something new and advanced to offer that made us excited. Now days all games are the same basically, I can run a 2005 game on 360 and a 2010 and you might not be able to tell the difference. You can't do the same between 2000 and 1995.

The switch to CD's
to analogue controllers
memory cards
online gaming(Dremcast+PC)
2d-3d jump, all within 10 years

Reading everything that everyone has posted here makes me want to expand my NES Collection even further. :) I have so many fond memories from the 90s:

-Playing my first Video Game
-Owning my first console
-Beating a Video Game for the first time
-Teaching the older kids a lesson (They said I couldn't kill a boss in Final Fantasy III, but I did it anyway.)
-Using a Super Scope for the first time
-Discovering Composite Video (What a day that was. lol.)

Those are just some of my memories. There are WAY too many to list here. One I especially love is when I first discovered portable gaming. :D

You got me thinking, back in the day when you discovered something in videogames it really was a big thing. I did write a thread about in game secrets and how people did not share them.

It really meant something to beat a boss or finish a level after trying for a bazillion times. Now you can just jump to youtube and see how it was done.

I hate difficult games, but got to say it meant something to have extra "skills" in them that made you pass to the next level

It was indeed a magical time in gaming. So much happened. We started the decade with most of us either playing NES or Sega Genesis. Then the 16-bit wars happened between Sega Genesis and SNES. We saw the birth of 3D gaming with 3D0, Saturn, PSX, and N64. We even got a glimpse of the future with Sega Dreamcast.

Such great games came from the 90s, too: Super Mario World, Super Metroid, LoZ: Link to the Past, Sonic Series, Street Fighter Series, Mortal Kombat Series, Final Fantasy Games, Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil Games, Goldeneye, Panzer Dragoon, Super Mario 64, LoZ: Ocarina of Time, Doom, Diablo, Quake, WWF Smackdown, and so many others.

It's strange. I've been gathering NES Games lately, but the more I gather, the more I want the 90s back. I thought that the more I gathered, the better I would feel, being able to experience the games that defined the 90s and all that. Instead, I only miss them more and more with each NES Game I get. Perhaps this is just nostalgia kicking in, which can make you really happy, or really sad, yet in a good way. I have since found a good way to make it feel like the 90s again:

1. Get a somewhat small CRT TV.
2. Break out your NES, SNES, Genesis, or whatever.
3. Plug it up to the TV using an RF.
4. Make the room dark.
5. Sit in your favorite seat.
6. Play.

I know it sounds really cheesy, but I found this to be rather fun. :)

Hah! That sounds great because on points 1, 2, 3, 4, & 6 reminds me of how I played Super Metroid while grounded.
I only had a 13" TV so it was real easy to literally have my TV taken away while grounded and it would be placed in the storage room under a desk with more stuff in front of it. So I sneaked my SNES in there w/Super Metroid, only had RF, the room had to stay dark or I'd be caught playing while grounded, and I played the whole game in that setting while I lay on the ground under a desk and other crap. Good memories but I really wish I didn't have to inhale all that dust while playing.

The 90's was a very special time in video games. From Super Mario 3 (in the US) to finishing up with the Dreamcast, I don't think any other decade had such a range of quality and style.

I got an NES for my 3rd Christmas, 1990. And I was instantly hooked. I don't think I've loved anything inanimate more than I love video games. Since the age of three it's been a constant support in my life. However, I fully appreciate how video games have changed. I used to be much more into the "retro" style, but I realized it was a bit pretentious for me, because what is retro to ME isn't nearly as retro as to other. Atari, Odyssey, Coleco players, etc. I just learned to love video games in general.

Having said that, I can say I loved the 90's because it had a very distinctive flavor. Early PS1 2D sprite based games are GORGEOUS in how technically crummy they look and sound. Mode 7 on SNES? Awesome! Great music? You bet. It's all good stuff.
