Dumb question, but what would be the definition of a "defining SHMUP of console XYZ"?

Which one comes to mind first in the greatest number of people.

Even a PAL one?

Nope. NTSC-J and NTSC-US are compatible. PAL is not without a converter or mod, unfortunately.

Aw. But we are just individuals.
Err. Grammatically and logically that makes sense, but what my intentions are that, what a single person's guesses of what SHMUP might be the most popular on a console may be limited by several factors. It is much easier to provide personal opinion about which SHMUPs are best for each console and tally up the votes to determine the most popular (the "defining"... for the purposes of this thread... on this board... among these voting users).

I take this approach because I can't think of what the best SHMUP on the Neo Geo would be. Or what might represent all arcade SHMUPs (possibly 1942 or Raiden, but that's only scratching the surface of all arcade SHMUPS). Or if "best on console" should be defined by sales popularity or technical achievement.

I agree with this list although I would swap Zanac Neo with DoDonpachi on the Ps1 !

Not my personal favorites but these are what I consider the defining ones. It's hard to decide on which one is definitive.

NES: Gradius or Lifeforce. Both had a big impact.
SNES: Gradius III is the most famous but it's kind of meh, I'd go with UN Squadron.
N64: I have no idea. Shooters don't really define this platform very well.
Master System: Fantasy Zone! Yeah!
Genesis: Either MUSHA or one of the Thunder Force games.
Saturn: Radiant Silvergun gets this for being the most famous but there's so many good ones.
Dreamcast: Ikaruga or Mars Matrix.
Playstation: Einhander tends to come to mind with a lot of people when I bring up PS1 and shmup. Thunder Force V sometimes.
PS2: Gradius V.

I failed miserably at picking just one.

You need to pick up some imports!

Several of these aren't shmups, either....
