I loved my Nintendo growing up, but as soon as my folks got me my Genesis - I really felt like I was in the next-gen! As mentioned above, both systems provided a distinct library of games -- really unique experiences. But based on a pure "coolness" factor, I would go with Genesis/MegaDrive ... I've always loved the way that baby looked; reminds me of K.I.T.T. every time!

I love both systems but I'd have to say SNES is better. It has better graphics, sound, and IMO more great games. In fact, I think SNES is the best console of all time. Still though, Genesis rocks! It has blast processing.

hah, I almost forgot that I made this thread. I knew by the time I remembered I'd come back to see some interesting stuff everyone has to say. I still stand by what I said in the beginning (SNES wins) But I still love having my sega stuff as well. I recently picked up a Nomad in a trade for one of my extra genesis consoles. Pretty damn cool I must say.

Never had a Nomad, only my trusty battery-devouring game gear. Game Gear vs Game Boy, now that would make for another interesting discussion

Game Gear is something I know very little about....it was basically a handheld master system right?

Yes it was, but it had a broader color palette than the master system. I believe there even was a Master System to Game Gear converter. It was my first portable gaming device so I'm a bit biased. For it's time it was an amazing piece of hardware.

I had the Genesis but in recent years I've built a nice SNES collection as well and I'm just experiencing a lot of it's big titles for the first time. This makes it a really tough call right now. If you asked me this when I was 12 I would of easily said Genesis. Right now they are pretty much even.

Sega Genesis vs. Super Nintendo Entertainment System
Platformers
Sonic The Hedgehogs, Ristar, Decap Attack, Dynamite Headdy, Kid Chameleon, Marvel Land, Mickey Mania, Quackshot vs. Mario World, Mario All-Stars, Donkey Kong Countries, Yoshi's Island
Decision: Highly debatable, but I give the edge to Sega on this one.
Action Platformers
Gunstar Heroes, Strider, Contra: Hard Corps, Castlevania: Bloodlines, X-Men 2, Earthworm Jim, Vector Men, Rocket Knight, Pulseman vs. Super Metroid, Castlevania IV, Sparkster, Mega Man Xs, Super Star Wars's, Contra 3, Phantom 2040
Decision: Very close, but Metroid ticks it to Nintendo.
RPGs and Action RPGs
Shining Forces, Phantasy Stars, Beyond Oasis, Sword of Vermillion vs. The Legend of Zelda, Final Fantasies, EarthBound, Chrono Trigger, Breath of Fires, Mario RPG, Uncharted Waters, E.V.O., Secret of Mana
Decision: SNES destroys the Genesis.
Sports:
NHL '91 to '98, World Series Baseball, Maddens '91 to '98, Mutant Leagues, Road Rash, PGA Tour Golfs, Virtua Racing vs. Super Punch-Out!!, F-Zero
Decision: Genesis destroys the SNES.
Beat-Em-Ups:
Streets of Rages, Golden Axes, Comix Zone, The Punisher, Hyperstone Heist vs. Final Fights, Batman Returns, Turtles in Time, Combatribes
Decision: Sega Genesis.
Shoot-Em-Ups:
M.U.S.H.A. vs. everything
Decision: Sega Genesis.
Fighting Games:
Street Fighter IIs, Mortal Kombats, Eternal Champions vs. Street Fighter IIs, Mortal Kombats, Killer Instinct
Decision: SNES.
Other Factors:
Technical Abilities: Blast Processing vs. Mode 7
Decision: SNES.
Expansion: Sega CD, Sega 32X, Master System Converter vs. Super GameBoy
Decision: Genesis.
Music: Sonic The Hedgehogs soundtrack vs. Final Fantasy soundtrack
Decision: SNES.
Legacy: Sega has neglected or destroyed nearly all of it's classic franchises and the current company shares only it's name and trademarks with what it was in the 90s vs. SNES games still lauded as some of the greatest of all time and many franchises are still alive, being reinvented in amazing ways and are perhaps even more popular today.
Final Decision: While I think the Genesis probably has a greater quantity of really, really good games it can only boast maybe 4 or 5 really great games: (Sonic 3 & K., Streets of Rage 2, Gunstar Heroes, M.U.S.H.A., Shining Force II) The Super Nintendo has about 10 all-time classic, nearly perfect games: (Super Metroid, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, EarthBound, Chrono Trigger, Yoshi's Island, Final Fantasy II, Final Fantasy III, Turtles in Time, Mario RPG, Secret of Mana, Donkey Kong Country, ActRaiser.)
In conclusion, if you want greater variety of the really good: Sega Genesis. If you want to experience a slightly lesser amount of extremely high quality: Super Nintendo. I had a Genesis growing up and acquired an SNES in 2004. As much as my heart wants to say Sega, my brain has to give the win to Nintendo.

There is no such game, as much as Mark from Classic Game Room HD would like you to believe. The first EA NHL game was:
NHL Hockey, released in 1991.
The next was:
NHLPA Hockey '93, released in 1992.
Then:
NHL '94, released in 1993.
Next:
NHL '95, released in 1994.
See a pattern? The original NHL Hockey could be called NHL '92, but in no way it is NHL '91.

That's the game I was talking about. It says [c] 1991 right there on your cartridge. I calls it like I sees it. Twas released in 1991 and includes the '91-'92 season roster. I only called it NHL '91 and not NHL Hockey for the sake of simplicity in order to group the whole series together. And really, who cares. This post was not worth getting out of bed for.
