I know this may be a little controversial, but I have donated and think that the Christopher Reeve Spinal Cord Injury and Paralysis Foundation does some great stuff.

That would be one I would consider.

I also think we should look into education too. I know of a couple charities that buy books and such for kids who have none at home - plus kids books are more difficult for crappy parents to trade for drugs unlike other charity items.

I was digging the holidays like last year.
For me November and December is crazy on my bank accounts with buying my kids and family presents, not to mention all of the food for the holiday feasts in both months.
So my vote is for the beginning of the new year after all the dust from the holidays have settled. Plus you never know what retro stuff may be donated after the members get new stuff for the holidays.

The only problem I see with the after new years approach is that come January 2nd my main concern is going to be the credit card and not helping folk out.

If you arrange the auction around the needs of the people donating stuff you might end up missing out on the folk who will be putting up the money while they still have it.

We did two weeks last time. I was thinking maybe the 1-17th of December, with payment being due on the 19th for pre-Christmas shipping (by the 21st) and by December 31st for all other shipping. That way, people who want to get stuff by Christmas can, and those .who want until the end of the month to pay can do that.

IF still open from suggestions, The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, if anyone has ever known someone with Parkinson's, then you know how much it changes the life of everyone involved.
