yeah, there's a bit of a "break-in" period with those replacement 72-pins. After a while they'll start working when depressed.

That seems to be a blessing. Pop cart in and no worries of stressing those pin contacts. Been years er decades since I messed with a NES. I thought the game wouldn't start without pushing the cart toast down, thinking there was a micro switch for power?

Yeah the NES is just a poor design all around. I'd go for a toploader myself if they weren't so expensive and had a/v out.

Wonder how difficult it would be to simply mod a toaster NES into a toploading one?

My tease earlier about a front load design, no toast.
Sounds like Dylan did that accidently, the front load approach. :D
Does the NES have that detect switch to cut power if the cart is not toast down mode?

It does not. You just lose connection to cart pins if they're not a super tight brand new connector. Of course this is deadly to save games if it is a battery game.

Okay, thanks. So possibly an easy mod then.

If you rigged up a normal slot and reinforced it, yeah, would work fine. It would be hard to get a grip to pull carts out if it was a normal slot. Definitely doable with proper reinforcement to hold the slot though.

Hey, did you ever get any progress on doing that mod? It would be really interesting to see.
