The newer reviews are actually less cussing and more reviewing. He's mellowed out quite a bit in his new AVGN videos.
His coverage of E3 was pitiful, but he really isn't very good when put on the spot like that. He's also more of a retro gamer and doesn't have a passion for newer games.
Yeah, he's getting back to his roots, but he's just not good unless everything is scripted. He just doesn't seem "genuine" to me anymore. His "Board James" reviews remind me of why I fell in love with his videos in the first place.
A lot of people don't seem good without a script. And combined with the fact that he really probably wasn't into the newer games, it didn't turn out good. Plus, he was probably rushed into it and didn't have time to plan ahead.
The worst thing about his E3 coverage was that he hinted that DK64 sucked. Which it does not!

I never tried DK64. Honestly, after playing Mischief Makers and Conker's Bad Fur Day I felt like no other platformers on the console could top them. At the time, I'd have said that they were the best of the old school(Mischief Makers)and best of the new school(Conker)

Seriously. Screw you Shao Kahn I'm gonna play Animal Crossing.
Did you skip past the DK Rap? It has important storyline information that vastly adds to the enjoyment factor of the game.
The basics of the game were ok, but the problems I had was with having to repeat levels with every chracter, and needing extra ram for a game I felt looked far worse than Banjo Tooie whiche didnt need one.
