I have tried countless times and it is starting to look like it's impossible.

Yes, I've played through it.

Are you shifting from low to high gear (L1/R1) after the first 5-10 seconds? If you run in low gear, you probably won't make it past the first checkpoint (I did this my first go at the SMS version). Shifting is manual, by default.

I had no idea you could shift gears so i will definitely have to give outrun another chance :D

So I played through Outrun 2019 last night.

Pros:
The one thing it does best - gives you a sense of speed.
Four different stages (the box says five?! - are they counting the credits screen?)
Jumps are fun, and not over/underused
Very forgiving compared to the original Outrun (or its ports)
Music is decent
A nice early attempt to blend polygons with sprites

Cons:
I often felt like it was hard to maintain control of the car.
There aren't many branching paths on each stage
The scenery is always far away, and there is little on the side of the road to keep your attention
Speed sometimes causes visibility problems

Anyone else give it a shot? Overall it is worth trying out, but I don't see myself going back to it regularly. I'm on to Outrun 2006 next - I expect that I'll probably spend a lot more time with that one.

Outrun 2019 isn't that bad and it was originally going to be a Sega CD game. Outrun for the Genesis is probably the best port out there as it has cool little easter eggs (like the dragon flying overhead in 2006) and has the Hyper difficulty.

reminder: playing classic OutRun via GBA

...I think my best route is still Left every time. I can pretty consistently make it right to the end of level 5 on that without much trouble. We should start posting our times, eh?

the rest of us besides D should start posting our times, eh?

I'm gonna have to take some screenshots of my times like that too, cuz the GBA version doesn't save times (unless it does and my battery is dead).

EDIT: what's yr best time so far in classic OutRUn, D? I could keep a running tab of everyone's best times in the first post.

Is score strictly based on time? What was your time? Are scores computed the same from version to version? Are course times comparable? It took a lot more work to get that lower score on the SMS version than the higher one on the AGES remake.
