In the novelization of Revenge of the Sith, it is revealed that Qui-Gon had learned a technique that let him persist as a force ghost after death. He was immolated at the end of Phantom Menace and it appears he was able to maintain his ego instead of dissapating back into the Force. He then teaches this technique to both Obi-Wan and Yoda. It appears that they both willingly release themselves to the Force in a further refinement of the technique. At the end of Return of the Jedi Vader dies and if I had to guess I'd say Obi-Wan and Yoda were able to preserve his ego and maintain him as a force ghost.

Fast, I don't recall anything in the EU specifically calling out that Obi-Wan becomes more powerful than he would normally have by giving himself up to the Force instead of dying. It was more that by dying the nature of Obi-Wan and Luke's relationship changes. Luke no longer has Obi-Wan's skills to rely upon; he must walk on his own. This lets Obi-Wan forge Luke into a weapon to defeat Vader, who still has feelings for his own son.

Yeah, I dont think my reason was a good one either. Obviously he was meant to go to a higher plane of being or some such, which is how he could talk to Luke from the Jedi afterlife I guess.

Popo, you are probably right, it has been many years since I read the books and I am probably confusing it with something else unrelated.

Star Tours was awesome, as was Captain Eo. Oh, how far both acts have fallen since then.

Yeah, Star Tours. If I recall correclty it was lead/hosted by C3PO. That was awesome for sure. I have not been to Disney Land since the early 90's though.
