Huh, I was always under the impression that FFA was Seiken Dentetsu 1, and that Sword of Mana was Seiken 2. Was one a remake of the other?

Just curious, as I find the renaming of games to fit US/Euro audiences to be quite interesting.

Secret of Mana was Seiken Densetsu 2.

FFA was SD1. Sword of Mana was a remake of SD1. Secret of Mana was SD2.

Oooh, Sword of Mana, the one that came out on GBA

I never knew that that was a remake of the first game in the series. Always wondered how it fit in.

Thanks! I may have to give that one a try, as FFA was pretty decent (I prefer Legends 3 as far as the GB FFs go though)

It's definitely confusing. Do the Final Fantasy Legends games play like Adventure/Mana? I have no idea.

Seiken Densetsu 3 is one of the greatest games ever though. Cue Duran in my sig. ;)
(although Lise is probably my favorite when it comes to abilities and being one of the best characters to use!)

Final Fantasy Legend is rebranded SaGa (the predecessor trilogy to Romancing SaGa). The first two games play very similarly, while the third plays mostly like a standard Final Fantasy with some elements of the first two.

The way the SaGa games work is your party is built up of various types of characters: humans, mutants, monsters, and in the second, robots. Each has a unique way of leveling. Humans level by using items on them. Mutants have random stat ups and gain abilities (and can lose them). Monsters have fixed stats but can grow by eating the meat of other monsters (which is sometimes dropped after battle). Robots gain stats from their equipped items. All weapons have a fixed number of uses (like in Fire Emblem). Robots recharge their item uses at the inn, but to compensate when you equip them with an item it halves the uses (and that cannot be recovered). There's also some interesting quirks, like martial arts moves, which get more powerful as you use them (so the last use does a ton of damage).

Now SaGa 3 (FFL3) is much more like a standard Final Fantasy. You gain experience and levels. However, you still have meat being dropped by monsters (as well as parts). If you eat meat you first turn into a beast, eat meat again and you turn into a monster. Leveling pulls you up the chain of the beast/monster (while in earlier games you had to strategically eat to travel up the chain). Beasts are the best at using techniques, while monsters have fixed ability sets. If you install parts you first become a cyborg, then a robot. Cyborgs gain stats from equipment, while robots gain stats by using items on them. Eating meat as a robot/cyborg takes you one step towards monsterhood, and the reverse for parts.

Haha oh man, so confusing. Well that clears some stuff up. I've heard some of the SaGa games have similar mechanics to FFII (from what I know Akitoshi Kawazu, one of the lead designers on FFI-II went onto do the SaGa series and all). All these games sound like they focus a lot on gameplay moreso than other stuff, but I can say I really liked the FFII PSP remake and am even a rare fan of The Last Remnant, so perhaps I'd really dig the SaGa games. lol, gotta check them out someday.

once you beat zero mission you unlock the original nes version. if it was me i would just play zero mission cuz once i finish the game i could just play the nes version for 10 minutes and be like 'aite lol this is boring' and turn it off and feel like i got my fix of both.

id rather play the original on an nes than a rom of zero mission on pc though

That's pretty much what I came in here to say -- it's the definitive answer. Buy one, get both! It's win/win no matter how you look at it.

Zero Mission is what all remakes should aspire to be. It's incredible, it managed to keep the feel and style of the original game, adding something new for the folks familiar with the game, while keeping the style fresh for those who never got to experience it. Rarely is a remake anywhere near this level of quality, and to include the original to boot!

Most of the time, I'm a fan of the original. I prefer the original Super Mario Bros. games over the All-Stars Remakes. I prefer the SNES versions of Donkey Kong Country games over the GBA versions, and so on.

But in this case, Zero Mission is infinitely better. It's like playing the original Metroid if it were made for the SNES rather than the NES. The way Samus moves and controls is very similar to the way she moves in Super Metroid. These control upgrades are a Godsend making the game infintely better. The controls alone make Zero Mission the better game. And the graphics also have a an upgraded 16-bit look to them, making it look a whole lot better to boot. Another great addition is the map. This makes traversing the planet much easier. You have to get very familiar with the original version to get anywhere because there is no map.

And you get the original version anyways when you beat the game. So it's like a 2-in-1 special with Metroid: Zero Mission!
