This is not the case in UK. We only got the 60Gb version at launch, so this is the only model with the emotion chip. 2nd gen had software based BC, and were released in 20 and 80Gb flavours. You are correct in that no further models have any BC.
Not true, the only BC PS3 we got was the 60GB version, and even then it wasn't full PS2 backwards compatibility. We never got the same 60GB PS3 that the US got. Every single SKU after the initial 60GB PAL system had no PS2 backwards compatibility at all.
Interesting... Only model I have 1st had experience of is 60gb 1st gen UK model - which I'm thinking about selling - any offers (will include my PSN account with c.35 games...)

Got mine used last year from Craigslist for $320 complete in box with some extra stuffs and with a 1 year of a 2 year Gamestop warranty still remaining. The only problem it has was a big old scratch on the shiny front plate. =( I want to replace it but it is just too much of a hassle so I bought one of those MGS4 vinyl skin to cover it up. I have since upgraded to a 250 GB.

Honestly, it's nice to have BC but I do all my PS1 and PS2 gaming on my Fat modded PS2 via XRGB-2+ to PC monitor. Everything just looks sharper and better on there. So far so good. It did freeze up twice on Uncharted a month ago and once on another game when I first bought it. Scared the hell out of me on both occasions. =I If it's broken, probably the laser will go bad, then I will probably fix it, with the YLOD being a real phenomenon and all. Hopefully I don't have to. Of all the systems I own, Sega CDX, Turbo Duo, Saturn, Dreamcast, PS1, PS2, PS3, only 1 system has died on me and that is the Turbo Duo. The laser crapped out 1 year after I bought it used 3 years ago. Still haven't fix that yet. =(
