Re: Your First RPG

Well,

Not counting The Legend of Zelda or any in its line, I'd have to say my first RPG was Secret of Mana. It was the first game that had most of the standard RPG elements in it and I was mesmerized because I had never seen anything else like it. I don't remember what the first turn-based RPG I ever played was. I'm not a big fan of turn-based RPG's so I've tended to avoid them. I must have played one a long time ago, though, for me not to like it. I think it may have been a Final Fantasy game. My guess is the last of the SNES releases (however you properly number that).

Incidentally, I'm more inclined to play turn-based RPG's these days though they're not my favorite.

Peace,

manaman

THAT'S RIGHT! I totally forgot about that. I got my Dragon Warrior the same way. I forgot that it came free with the Nintendo Power subscription. Thanks for the reminder.
Dragon Warrior on the NES was my first, and I believe it was also the first RPG available on a home console
Dragon Warrior is predated by Dragon Stomper for the Atari 2600 (with Supercharger). There were also the AD&D games for the intellivision mentioned earlier. Both date to 1982. Dragon Warrior is of course still a great title.

Ultima, don't remember which probably V or VI. But the one I really enjoyed was Ultima Underworld, probably because it was third person, and this was way before Wolfenstein came out.

On the console side I think it was Faxanadu that hooked me. I didn't own the cart but it belonged to my best friend and he hated it but I enjoyed it so much remember had a notebook where I wrote all the codes the guy in the church gave you.

I got to play Zelda very late into the NES life but it was a better experience overall.

without a doubt in my top 10 games of all time. maybe my all time number one. although i did play Quest for glory on PC and things...my fondest childhood memories of RPGs stem from this game. the music, battle system and gaming was incredible. i played it again on emulators and its still incredible.

i like this more than Chrono and FFVI

The Bard's Tale - Tales of the Unknown: Volume 1 for the IBM PC back in 1985 or 1986?

My god I've lost track of how many PC and console RPG's I've played in the last 24-25 years!

For me, the first RPG that I can remember was Ultima III on the Atari 800 followed by Ultima IV. Then I had about 20 year hiatus from RPGs until recently.

I think my first one was the "Western" RPG of the Realms of Arkania series, Blade of Destiny:

I played a bunch of Western RPG games (including stuff like Ultima Underworld), and I played Zelda games.

I don't remember very well what was my first JRPG, but I think I only played one of those really late. Wizardry is sort of close to a JRPG as far as the stuff I played goes, and I played a bit of Wizardry VI before I had played any "true" JRPG.
I think I played a bit of a PC freeware game, without finishing it first. The first I played to the end may have been Chrono Trigger, which I played in 2006 or so?

Ivo.

Shining Force II
Was only about 11 and I did not really like it at the time but it is one of my favourite games now.
