That was me, my 1st party RF unit only allowed for mono (There is no pin in the mini-din for audio).Ziggy587 wrote:I think there was some talk in this thread about that... some Genesis RF's are only mono sound. was just looking around on the topic of Sega A/V and found these great pinout diagrams. im sure they would be useful for alot of you.:Ziggy587 wrote:I think there was some talk in this thread about that... some Genesis RF's are only mono sound. Sega Genesis 1 A/V (8 pin DIN): http://pinouts.ru/Game/sega1_pinout.shtml
Sega Genesis 2/32X/Nomad A/V (9 pin mini-DIN): http://pinouts.ru/Game/sega2_pinout.shtml
Sega Saturn A/V (10 pin mini-DIN): http://pinouts.ru/Game/sega3_pinout.shtml
So according to these, the model 1 has mono only but the model 2 has the ability for mono and stereo.
if you can buy the appripriate DIN connecters for your system, this might be a cleaner way of doing the project without butchering your old R/F switches. (could be wrong though)
lots of other useful pinouts on that site if you do a search for what you want.

Re: Gen/Saturn|Guide:Converting a RF unit into a composite cable
Yea, if you have the pin out you could make a stereo composite cable, or your own RGB scart cable, etc. The point of this 'mod' is to take what you have and make it better with pretty much no cost on the users end for a free upgrade.
As I mentioned in my first post, I was planning on making my own composite cable for the MD, however I could'nt find a local electronics store that sold the Mini-Din plug, thus I did this.
If you were goign to make your own cable, it would be worthwhile with to make a RGB Scart cable, MMMONKEY's site has a great tut.
Cheers for the links though.

no worries. just thought it might be nice to understand the inner workings for those interested.emwearz wrote:Yea, if you have the pin out you could make a stereo composite cable, or your own RGB scart cable, etc. The point of this 'mod' is to take what you have and make it better with pretty much no cost on the users end for a free upgrade.

Re: Gen/Saturn|Guide:Converting a RF unit into a composite cable
No, it's definitely useful. The only thing is, from what I've read, those 8-pin plugs for the model 1 are hard to find. The 9-pin mini DINs can be found, however. Too bad you can't get it at a Radio Shack, it'd probably be a few bucks at most.
Re: Gen/Saturn|Guide:Converting a RF unit into a composite cable
I am attempting to do this mod right now.. but my 1st party RF only has orange green and white wires....

Re: Gen/Saturn|Guide:Converting a RF unit into a composite cable
Didn't really have to create a new thread if you were gonna ask it here anyways
Pop open the RF box and look at the PCB, there might be some indication as to what the wires are. Those orange, green and white wires ARE the red, white and yellow (just colored differently). The wires in my 3rd party Genesis RF were also colored differently, but there was a letter printed on the PCB next to each wire. Some times it wont flat out tell you in English, you'll have to use your head. There's also trail and error.

Re: Gen/Saturn|Guide:Converting a RF unit into a composite cable
I would just trial and error it.
As said didnt need to make a new topic about it.

Re: Gen/Saturn|Guide:Converting a RF unit into a composite cable
If you end up having to trail and error it, my first guess would be white is white, orange is yellow, and green is red.
Also, I'm not sure how the mini DIN is constructed, but would it be possible to splice it open to see which wire is going to which pin? If you could, then all you would have to do is look at the pin diagram for it to tell which wire is which.
But trial and error shouldn't take too long, the only downside is it being hard to tell which audio side is which. As I type this, I now remember I had this problem when doing mine.

Re: Gen/Saturn|Guide:Converting a RF unit into a composite cable
Sorry guys. I didn't think anyone would be regularly checking this thread.
Anyways opened up the RF box and this is what i see.

I took a look at some pinouts and i think this is a mono only RF..
