Do Vinyl Records Sound Better ?

the hum is a grounding issue. if your turntable's phono jacks don't have a little prong connected (see the small black wire on the left side of the picture) then you will get a hum.

solution: buy a decent turntable! my old sony one lacked one of these and for various other reasons was just not good. i'm not sure, but you might be able to eliminate the hum without a group loop isolator - but i think these are usually to eliminate a connection problem from the speakers to the receiver and not from the turntable to the receiver

Yeah, I just checked it out. There's nothing for ground wire.

Do receivers need to be grounded too?

Oh. It's just with my receiver I get a hum with or without a turntable hooked up. I push the "phono" button and then it starts humming. I'll just mess around with it some more I guess.

Just found a really interesting site - I didn't know records could do stereo.

Really?

It's printed on the disc's labels and jackets.

Even though I know they were capable of stereo, I pulled out my Evil Empire vinyl (at random) just to see if it was blatantly printed on the jacket or center label but it wasn't.

It's usually right under the title or next to the catalogue number.

The only vinyls that usually scream stereo on the jackets etc... are older ones from the late 60's-70's.

More specifically I didn't understand how it was possible for the record to contain stereo. I actually thought that the track the needle followed was smooth and there were bumps at the bottom of the groove. Probably because I had one of those fisher-price record players that had those thick brightly colored records as a kid and I always kinda thought they were the same. I had no idea real records were that much more advanced...

UBERTRON777 wrote:Do vinyl records sound better than their digital counterparts? I want to know because I'm considering investing in a turntable and beginning a vinyl collection. I know that it has more benefits from a collector's standpoint as records are easier to show off than say an external hard drive full of music. I'm not too worried about the security of the records either because then actually owning the record would make downloading it for free legal right? I'm not sure about that but who is gonna take me to court for that anyway?
If you are an audiophile:

If you want to enjoy the full richness of vinyl, you will need a 2-channel receiver, an old turntable, and a decent pair of speakers.

This is really important :!: Every cartridge has a different sound signature :!: Some people spend thousands looking for the right sound signature. On the plus side, cartridges can be compared to wine or cougars (women). They get better with age and they become more expensive.
