Plus, there are some fantastic games on the Wii, to the point where I thought it was better than the Gamecube. Lots of trash, yes. But lots of awesome, too.

The GBA played host to many of my favorite games, and with Zero Mission, probably my favorite Metroid.

Undoubtedly, the DS, GBA, and Wii had fantastic libraries. People often criticize the Wii's library for containing many shabby ports and shovelware, however, and for some reason, they do not aim the same criticisms at the GBA.

It's because Wii marketing actively sought casual gamers, thus "hardcore" gamers took offense to that, and thereby retaliated by pretending the Wii's library is all junk.

Add to it that the Wii's library was very different than the competition and different is always bad in people's eyes. It was filled with exclusives that people have never heard about. I would almost dare to say the wii is comparable to the ps2 in size and quality minus the meager showing in fighting games.

In size maybe, but I believe PS2 library is hands down better than the Wii in terms of quality.

The problem the Wiis perception is that it had the power of the previous gen consoles but with motion controls. There are several games that released for both PS2 and Wii. Multi-plat current gen (at the time) releases that were ported to Wii were usually terrible scaled down versions. So it did not see many of the big AAA releases.

It housed 1st party games and typically a bunch of quirky or niche 3rd party stuff. It doesnt surprise me that it appeals to retro gamers like many here on Racket, but it didnt have the mass appeal, besides the 1st party games overall.

It's probably glossed over due to the dominance of the platform in the mobile space. Even if people recognize that a ton of crappy licensed titles and such were cranked out for people to play between Pokemon games...the library as a whole is peerless in that generation/market. It basically was that generation of handheld, outside a few oddities like the NGPC.

The Wii, on the other hand, actually had real competition and only represented a slice of that generation. There's actually something to compare to

Funny you say that. I went to my local record store yesterday and pawed through the stacks of GBA carts. 95% looked like junk. And they want like $40 for the loose Mario carts. Sigh.

Being an active GBA collector, I can vouch for this unpopular opinion. Contra Alien Wars EX was NOT a good port, neither were the Atari/Midway arcade ports (Spy Hunter/Super Sprint were totally unplayable for example).

As for shovelware, you'll find all the cartoon/kid's/anime licensed dreck at every game store around here, and gotta dig for something that's even halfway decent. But at least the Nintendo-made stuff is "reasonably" priced, albeit at the level where a small profit can be made, but nowhere near $40.

I look forward to putting some heavy effort into building up my Wii collection eventually. It does have a ton of crap to dig through, but yeah there is clearly a lot of good and exclusive material on it. The Gamecube is the real weak link to me... and I don't think the N64 really compares to the PSX at all in retrospect. I'd put the Wii above those two easily.

I agree that the Wii and the GBA were excellent systems for people who liked the right kinds of games and were willing to be selective. There were enough games produced for either that there was no lack of selection except in a couple key genres. And where the systems were strong they were REALLY strong. Much better selection and options than the Gamecube.

My problem is though going on ebay and such in these lots there sure is a lot of the shovel crapware in them instead of the good stuff(gba is the worst about that since most of the lots have show/movie cash-ins that someone else should have handled...). Seems like you really really have to dig to find good lots without the shovel ware in it

My systems: NES, SNES, N64, Gamecube, Wii, original gba, gba sp(001), ds lite, 3ds, vita, psp, PSone(101 model) ps2, ps3(320gb model), ps4, retron 5, and Dreamcast.
