In part 4 of the Game Trailers Shenmue II stream, Michael Huber notes that if Last Guardian and Shenmue III were announced, it would be the best moment(s) of his life. Little did we know a few months later, and of course the famous reaction.

That is the fun thing of watching this. Most of it was done months before e3 and hearing them chat about their dreams for e3 and how it would be impossible. So special.

So I fired up Shenmue 2 to do some things I haven't accomplished in the game, mainly the Fangmei birthday party and the Duck races. I can now proudly say that I have unlocked the duck races and participated in the races with my own personal duck and I have to say it is hysterical. The duck has subtitles and is a force to be reckoned with. Still haven't won a race yet, but I'm getting better!

It took me a while to win a race but it gets easier.

That fanfare sound you hear at the start of each race at 5:47 I recognized from playing Hoyle Card Games. Go to 3 Towers (tri-peaks) and every peak you clear you get a piece of that startup music and the last part is when you clear the board.

Why don't we do a together retro of the first 2 Shenmue games? Although I don't know when the kickstater will be released, it might be a cool idea. I have the first game lying around, but I haven't had a chance to play it yet. (Shenmue virgin here).

If they announce a Shenmue 1 & 2 HD re-release I will make sure that it happens. Luckily, we still have at least 2 years for Shenmue 3 to come out and for an HD re-release. One can hope.

Also. Today is Fuku-san's birthday! Happy birthday Fuku-san!

This thing right here, I would like it very much if it happens.

I've learned not to get my hopes up, though. The likelihood of getting this is about as high as us getting a third Shenmu-... Oh, wait....

I feel like this interview was posted somewhere in this thread, but I was reading through it yesterday, and it's quite a good read. http://www.1up.com/features/disappearance-suzuki-part-1
JM: I play games to do things I can't do in real life. Do you think games have become too real? If you were to do Shenmue 3, for example, would you take the same approach and make it super realistic, or would you take a different approach?

YS: The concept for Shenmue 3 already exists, so... [Laughs] The world of Shenmue 1 and 2 expanded outward. So, for example, in the original games, of all the data used for dialogue in the game, the main characters' dialogue was about 20%. The remaining 80% was dialogue by characters other than the two main characters. But Shenmue 3 doesn't expand outward, but inward. A lot of the dialogue is used for the main character and especially dialogue with Shenhua. They talk about a lot of different, deeper things. For example, and I can't say too much, but here's an example.

This is not actually in the game, but as an example to give you an idea of what I mean by deeper dialogue, when Shenhua and Ryo are at home, Shenhua will ask Ryo if he would like to drink tea or coffee and the player will select one or the other. Or, Shenhua will ask Ryo a hypothetical question like: "There are four animals; a monkey, cat, dog and bird. You are crossing the river but you need to leave one behind. Which one will you leave behind?" And the player has to choose one. Shenhua will ask lots and lots of questions like these and the answers will get stored in the game and affect the outcome of the player's relationship with other characters. It's like a personality test. For example, the person who leaves behind the monkey is the type of person who leaves their wife.
I've heard Yu talking about this before: The shift in focus between the second and third game. Considering that this interview was from a few years ago, I'm happy that Yu seems to have kept this basic structure for the game mentally intact over the last 14 years. I hope that, ultimately, fans aren't turned off from the game with the depth of gameplay coming in the form of main character interactions rather than environment/world interaction. Personally, I'm very excited about it.

The model 1 and 2 board stuff is pretty amazing, also. I can't believe the lengths he went to just for textures in VF2. Sounds like Tak Hirai's time at Sega AM2 was, 'exciting,' and I was never aware of the reason Assembly was used all the time back in the day. Also, I get the sense that Yu thinks of Miyamoto as something of the hack I find him to be.

In other news, I saw a nico live event, supposedly from April of this year, with Itagaki and Yu Suzuki. Was a little uncomfortable, but what was interesting was Itagaki congratulating Yu on Shenmue III. There didn't really seem to be any context to it though. I think it kind of coincides with Sega renewing the trademark for Shenmue, though. May have just been in relation to Yu getting permission from Sega to use the property.
Scratch that. Looks like perhaps it was from Aug 4th, not April 8th.
