I give up on Fire Emblem: Sacred Stones. The last two levels really wore me down and I lost Seth, so I can't beat the final level.

I also got to thinking - as someone who appreciates the sport, but is barely a casual fan of watching/following the NFL - do you guys who are followers feel that Madden will be more remembered for his contributions to the game, or the video games?

Obviously from where I sit I assume it would be the latter. But like I said, I'm out of the loop.
from a non-NFL fan, yeah. I know him as "the guy on Madden games" first. And aware of him as a commentator. But never knew him as a player. Which is why I was asking.
I think in the future the only people who will know Madden from his coaching days and commentating days will be old people, Raiders fans and really hardcore football fans. Everyone else will know him from the Video games. (And noise, he was a coach in the NFL)
dsheinem wrote:It's pretty hard to say, really. He was probably the most loved color commentator of any era, one of the best coaches in NFL history (a HOFer), and obviously has the video game thing. I'd guess in the end (e.g. 50 years from now when few people remember his work in the booth and EA is a fledgling subsidiarity of Rovio making "Angry Birds NFL Football 2063"), his bust will still be in Canton and the majority of football fans will know who he is moreso than most video game players would. I'd actually be surprised if the "Madden" name makes it another 10 years, but time will tell. It may end when he dies.
I disagree Dave, as long as there is a NFL there will be a market for NFL games. And the Madden brand is the most recognizable name in NFL video games. I don't see these games dying out anytime soon.

He never played in the NFL.

He was a great coach and well known commentator. Fans of football will probably mostly remember the commentator, but he is up there with the other great coaches as far as Landry, Noll, Walsh etc.. He has one of the highest winning percentages as a coach.

Which is why I think he'll be best known for that, ultimately. I don't know what products these folks endorsed or what kind of careers they had outside of coaching. Same with most great coaches. Madden is a special case, but I think if EA can get away with not paying for the Madden name (especially after he is dead), they will transition it to something like simply "NFL 2024."

I think the answer lies in "50 years from now, will there be more people who know major names in the history of video games or more people who know major names in the history of the NFL?" Right now, I think it is the latter. I suspect that will still be the case in the future.

I highly recommend John Madden's autobiography. Life has not always been easy on the guy, and he is as interesting as humans get. His phobias, the reasons for them, his friendships, his view on life, etc. all great stuff.

And Madden's stories about Darryl Stingley are heart breaking. Madden really cares about people, their families...just a salt of the Earth type of guy.

Was the fear of flying thing was what lead to his retiring from coaching? I was a bit young during his 10 year coaching stint to recall. I know he had alot of hall of famers on those teams.

Nah. He accomplished what he wanted to do as a coach and was tired of the stress. So was spawned the Madden Cruiser.
