Re: What are you playing?
Since I was doing well in Streets of Rage 2 I decided to give Final Fight a whirl.
Didn't make it to the end of Stage 2!

Started star ocean last hope last night, the combat is a bit tricky to get used to and you NEED to check the tutorial to fully know how to use it properly. I like it so far.

My Metal Gear marathon is drawing to a close now. Wrapped up MGS at the weekend and just beat MGS2 in one sitting. One long, thoroughly post-modern sitting.
Now all that's left is to brave new waters with MGS4. One problem: I don't have a PS3.

I'm playing the nine canon games chronologically in order of events so MGS3 was the first game I played.

Yeah I thought about doing that but it would have meant waiting to play MGSV and I didn't really want to wait that long.

Re: What are you playing?
Dragon Quest Heroes is one of the most unique Warriors style games I've played, much like Hyrule Warriors. It seems it takes a long running game franchise to be licensed out to them for Tecmo Koei to really get creative with the musou style. I think this is in no small part due to people from said franchises actually getting involved with the creation of these games.
This game feels very much like a typical rpg, but one wherein enemy encounters play out like a Dynasty Warriors game. However, due to its strong rpg influence, there are aspects of combat that distinguish it from other warriors games. You have a party of 4 characters for one thing. You can switch control back and forth between them while the AI will take over for whichever characters you aren't using. Like any good rpg, you'll want to make use of your entire party's abilities to win and you'll have to watch their health, their magic points and even resurrect them from combat when they fall. And every character has special attacks or magic attacks that use MP.
I had a great boss fight against 3 mechanical enemies where I had to put people in my party with lightning magic attacks to stun the bosses with and I had to quickly switch from one character to the next when my MP ran out in order to keep the pressure on my enemies. Otherwise, they'd quickly ko my party members with their ridiculously powerful attacks. I also had to take care to avoid any attacks coming by way. Unlike many warriors games I've played, dodging is actually very important in this game. Some enemies can do a lot of damage to you with a single attack if you're careless. Both this game and Hyrule Warriors place a greater emphasis on dodging attacks than other warriors games. In true rpg fashion, I had an NPC fighting alongside my party for this fight, who later joined my party. And post battle, I returned to HQ to buy equipment, allocate skill points, sythesize items, talk to NPCs, etc. before pulling up the world map to decide where my air ship would take us next. The game really feels more like an rpg than a warriors game.
The battles also focus heavily on defense, whether it be protecting an NPC or protecting areas. Since you can't be everywhere at once, you'll have to summon monsters to protects spots on the map. You have to actually pick up coins from defeated monsters before you can use them though. There's kind of that Pokemon catch them all thing going on. So this feels like a tower defense game mixed with a warriors game. The boss fights are great and feel more involved than other warriors games, including Hyrule Warriors
My only knock against this game are the characters, who are all very cliche and tropy. Some are even obnoxious. 2 out of the 3 female characters I've encountered so far are extremely unlikable, reckless idiots with an attitude. One of them also has a very stupid accent and speaks very poor English, which would be okay were she not such an otherwise unlikeable character. I don't know if this is typical of the Dragon Quest series (I've never played a DQ game before), but the characters kind of suck. Therefore, the story sucks. This kind of makes me wish Square Enix would green light a Final Fantasy Heroes game.
Overall though, it's a fun game and really stands out from other warriors games
